Ignition Coil choice

Post by Neil »

I'm trying to source all the bits and pieces for a twin cam conversion.
Just need advice on what type of ignition coil people are using?

Would this Evo 3 job work out?

Yes, I've seen them support upwards of 450hp easily. The ignitors are really easy to interface to too, and have a tacho output that will drive your factory tach, with a small modification.

For the price of LS1 coils, you'd be damn close to these:

http://www.aemelectronics.com/high-outp ... -coil-1240

Which I've personally run a bunch of tests on (not AEM branded ones, but the exact same unit however) and they're pretty damn robust.

If you've already got the EVO coil pack though, run it, they're up to the job.

COP's are sweet, and nice and tidy, but unless you use CDI coils, and convert to a CDI setup, you usually end up with less spark energy than a well sorted 'Coil Near Plug' setup with a short HT lead. COP units typically have to be pretty small, which means there isn't space for beefy windings, so less magnetic energy storage, thus less spark.

Still, if it works, and doesn't break down under full boost, it's fine :-).

Thanks for the info,

What are the best (& hopefully cheaper) suppliers of these ?

Does it make a difference as to which ECU can use each ignition method ?

(probably looking at Wolf v4 vs Autronic SMC) - still trying to work out which ECU to use atm ?
Any thoughts most welcome
(nb: I don't have a tuner yet so don't have a tuner-ECU preference)

Thanks for your help

Any aftermarket ECU you choose will be able to run any of the coils mentioned previously.

The factory EVO setup uses an external ignitor, and each coil has two posts, for the wasted spark setup mitsy used.

The rest of the coils mentioned all have internal ignitors, and you'll need one coil per cylinder.

I'm a Link fan-boy, so I'd suggest one of those :-). A G4+ Storm would be perfect for a DOHC setup. If you wanted to switch to a simpler idle air control system then you could even go to a G4+ Atom, which are really really cheap now... But you have to be careful you don't run out of aux inputs and outputs, as they're pretty limited.

Unfortunately limited tuners over here for link, they are a good ecu though
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

Thanks for the replies.
OK, so I got myself a set of 4 LS1 coils.
What are peoples recomendations for an ignitor and the best place to source one?

If anyone is using a 4 x LS1 coil system could you please share your setup?

I think I'm going to need to get my Autronic SMC modified and was wondering what people think the best ignition setup would be for a forged 2.3L DOHC with Garrett GT30r & Kelford 272 cams...
