Yes, I've seen them support upwards of 450hp easily. The ignitors are really easy to interface to too, and have a tacho output that will drive your factory tach, with a small modification.
COP's are sweet, and nice and tidy, but unless you use CDI coils, and convert to a CDI setup, you usually end up with less spark energy than a well sorted 'Coil Near Plug' setup with a short HT lead. COP units typically have to be pretty small, which means there isn't space for beefy windings, so less magnetic energy storage, thus less spark.
Still, if it works, and doesn't break down under full boost, it's fine :-).
What are the best (& hopefully cheaper) suppliers of these ?
Does it make a difference as to which ECU can use each ignition method ?
(probably looking at Wolf v4 vs Autronic SMC) - still trying to work out which ECU to use atm ?
Any thoughts most welcome
(nb: I don't have a tuner yet so don't have a tuner-ECU preference)
Any aftermarket ECU you choose will be able to run any of the coils mentioned previously.
The factory EVO setup uses an external ignitor, and each coil has two posts, for the wasted spark setup mitsy used.
The rest of the coils mentioned all have internal ignitors, and you'll need one coil per cylinder.
I'm a Link fan-boy, so I'd suggest one of those :-). A G4+ Storm would be perfect for a DOHC setup. If you wanted to switch to a simpler idle air control system then you could even go to a G4+ Atom, which are really really cheap now... But you have to be careful you don't run out of aux inputs and outputs, as they're pretty limited.
If anyone is using a 4 x LS1 coil system could you please share your setup?
I think I'm going to need to get my Autronic SMC modified and was wondering what people think the best ignition setup would be for a forged 2.3L DOHC with Garrett GT30r & Kelford 272 cams...
