WTB: Cheap car! in Brisbane or Sydney

Post by dirtygalant »

Hey gents,

I will be over in Brisbane August the 23rd and heading to Sydney to see family beginning of September.

I would like to purchase a $1000-2000 car (hopefully road legal) not long after I get to Australia. I would prefer to find one in Brisbane but if something is available in Sydney I could purchase there and drive back to Brisbane. I was hoping to find one in Brisbane before I head to Sydney so I could drive to Sydney and have a bit of a road trip along the way.

At this stage I'm after whatever I can get - with my budget I suppose I can't be too picky, so long as it's somewhat presentable and has/or could easily obtain a RWC. Don't mind something with a few issues as I'm a bit handy like that, but the price must obviously reflect that.

Would prefer Mitsubishi as it's the language I speak, something along the lines of an HH/HG Galant (or even HJ if they are nearly as cheap) or even a smelly Magna. Have a preference to mid-sized vehicles around 2.0-3.0L in capacity and 5spd manual preferred but could make do with an automagic. I am open to any alternatives however.

Please let me know if you know of anything!

Thanking you all muchly,
Phil

thanks for that mate if you could keep an eye out that would be awesome!

Yeah I guess HG/HH or even HJ Galants aren't so common over there as they were here. At one time the late 80s the Galant was the only car to ever out-sell a Toyota Corolla in the small-medium size class. Then we had the flood gates of used imports opened up in the early 90s and a crapload more of them came here too. They may not be the best car today, but I've had so many of them I feel I know them inside out just about, and they've always proved to be reliable for me.

If I were going to move to Australia permanently I would look at bringing my VR-4 over with me, should be easy-ish to register there.... the Eterna on the other hand...

If u could handle something older, my flatmate has a 83 sigma 2.6 auto that he'd sell for only a few hundred bucks,i can investigate what it needs for rwc if u like?
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

that would be perfect! I don't mind something older, and I would be just as familiar with an 83 Sigma as I would an HG/HH/HJ Galant. I was aiming towards something 90ish for good fuel economy/safety etc but a Sigma will be good enough for a temp car.

if it's only going to be a few hundred bucks plus not too much work to get a RWC, then beggars can't really be choosers can they? :P

My recent trip from Sydney to Townsville was 2385Klms (coast Rd) and $850 in 6 tanks over 2 days!
But that was in my truck with my grinder on the back. Almost 6 tone!
Cheers Jason
