Starion running horrible

Post by zegga »

Hey all.
My car has recently been running badly, if i put my foot down itll start spluttering and running horrible. It will run if im gentle and even get on full boost. But sometimes itll want to cut out. The other day she started to only run on two cylinders, 2 and 3 plugs were black with fuel. Any ideas whats going on? If anyone in Adelaide has a working map sensor i can test in here that would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the nightmarish world of not-working Starions. :(

Sounds like a few things, have you changed your plugs/leads, etc?

is your car a JA JB or JD?

JA are notorious for leaking fuel injectors.

Try checking your water temperature sensor. If faulty, or wire fallen off, ECU will see this as cold water and make the motor run rich & foul the plugs.

Yes its a JA Australian spec 2.0 which i thought only had one (or two) fuel injector? Its strange its working on the outer cylinders though. Do you know if any injectors from any other make of car would work?

Where would i find the temp sensor?
Ill post a pic of my engine bay.

Heres the engine bay if youre interested. The chap before me added all these bypass hoses across the place. One to the waste gate, if you can see the little valve with the U and O marked.

wrong...

zegga i'd be doing a compression test first, then clean all electrical connections on the sensors etc. the coolant temp sensor is located near the thermostat housing, it is the 2 wire one (temp guage is the 1 wire)

how mechanically minded are you? you can remove the injector hat from the throttle body to check the injectors for leaks, but i'd only do that if you know what you're doing. if you undo the wrong screws and disturb the wrong parts you can create more problems as the injectors typically leak out the side of them where the wires go into the injectors themselves (not the hat necessarily)

Ill have a look. I tried doing a compression test . got good compression on the 1 and 4. but with 2 and 3 the gauge wouldnt give a reading.

why wouldnt the guage give a reading? that might be your problem. might have blown a head gasket between cylinders.

Injectors, and or seals, My JB used to leak through the "o" rings over the injector into the plenum

My 300ZX did the same thing when it had a blown head gasket.
No compression on 2 & 3 suggests the same.

Check your water and oil, see if they've been mixing at all.
