Gearbox Oil

Post by DANMAN »

Hey guys. Anyone know how much transmission oil a Starion gearbox needs. I put in 2.5L's. Is that right?

There's a bolt on the side of the box, LHS I think. Undo it and stick your finger in. If you feel oil at the thread or a touch below, it's full.

Yeah, I went to undo the filler plug and it is half stripped and seized tight. I had to remove the gear shift and fill it through the top of the box so I couldn't wait till it flowed out of the filler hole to check if it was full (as the stripped bolt is still in it). I heard 2.5L was right so lets hope so!!!

Is that wide or narrow box?
I have a wide block box. Spose I just do as that diagram shows though... :)

haha had this exact same problem last night. Did the clutch and got everything back together fine, until we had to get the gearbox filler bolt out. Seems like its supa glued in or something  Went at it with everything and stil couldnt get it off and being nearly midnight looks like the car gonna be sitting on axel stands for another 2 weeks while i at work :( :( :( Didnt think of putting oil in thru shifter hole at time

seems to be a common theme, we had to weld a nut onto the inspection hole bolt with the welder at the highest settings and pack it full of weld before i could get it off with a ~5' breaker bar.

I think mine took pretty much spot on 2.5L

Out of interest danman, what size socket did you use for the drain plug?

And make sure you can undo the filler bolt before you undo the drain plug.

Heard a story not long ago of a guy who got the drain off no worries, drained his gearbox, then couldn't undo the filler. You can imagine how much of an ass that would be.
