here we go again.
i got a vr4 so I didn’t have to work on old engines anymore. that lasted all of 10 minutes.
right, my friend stazz does some funny stuff. I was just gonna pull bits out till I found the prob but I figure asking those in the know might be faster. when cold it pops and buggers around with small backfires out the air cleaner if you open the throttle too much. most of the probs go away when warm but I still think it is lacking in the bottom end / torque department, as I am quite sure my old 1.8l cordia would kick its but off the line to about 50ks, where this stazz seems to pick up and take off (end of second, start of third) even when warm if you stab it too hard it just gives up and nose dives. the afm only has one square and one round hole in it. isn’t the stazz supposed to have 2 round holes and one square? the plugs and so on are ok, the dizzy cap and rotor are average but I have seen worse. any ideas anyone? btw, I take it from the lack of replies to my other post there are no wrecks in Perth hu?
cheers

My Starion when cold does the backfire thing too, can't take it over about 3500-4000rpm until a couple of blocks. My Galant 4G63 DOHC non-turbo is like driving a Fiat Bambina on the motorway when its cold.
No power down low can be caused by heaps of things to be honest, so really dunno.

Thanks all; exhaust was looked at last night and leak fixed. that was when this prob became more noticeable. but not blocked.
I rang Jason just be4 logon and spoke to him about it. :D
I guessed it could be anything, spose I will have to find it now..... was hopeing u would say "easy fixed, just kick ......."

Compression test might be a good idea as well.
Could be a case of just not getting enough compression down low.
Once again just a guess, but these tests are probably a good idea none the less. From what I have learned in NZ, the four point 4G63 engines (both DOHC and SOHC) were known for having crappy piston rings etc etc and they wore out easily. You can normally tell by the amount of smoke the thing blows, and how quick the oil catch can fills up after a good old fashioned thrashing. Not sure about the DOHC Turbo models, but both mine and a previous SOHC Galant I had, you can just feel the lack of compression and power.
Never had that issue with the Starion SOHC G63 motor though.

Backfires?
Backfiring out the inlet sounds like valve timing trouble.
Have you checked you valve timing? You may have slipped one notch on the timing belt. Check the ignition timing aswell.
Every AFM I have seen has 1 square hole and 2 round ones.

everything like that seems fine, the engine is realy tight and dosent blow any smoke at all, jitter test is all good. i do suspect the timeing belt is a little old, so we where gonna chamge it anyway.... will let u know if it helps. thanks :)

I just fixed this and the extra air was making the car go bad but not like that, when i put it back together i didn't put the air filter back in, and it sort of did that, apparently the AFS needs to have air through the middle of it to work, which brings me to my point, is your AFS ok? is it connected, try disconnecting it while it's idling see if it makes a difference...dirty sanchez wrote:Check to make sure the pipe from the air filter/AFM to the turbo is not broken and leaking air, this is a very common problem.
