u sure its broke?
old wiring in almost any car can stop the solenoid from working. i *think* it needs 7amps just to trigger the solenoid and switch the electric motor on. have you tried putting a wire straight from the '+' battery terminal to the trigger on the back of the starter? my cordia did this after it sat for 6 months or so. i (and most people i think) just rig up a relay and use the old starter wire to trigger that.
my 2 cents....

starter motor
i got one last week for my starion, im in adelaide got it brand new at motor traders in lonsdale for $127.
anyone got a diagram?
you take +12v from the battery and run that to the switched input of the relay, ground to ground and the old starter wire to the trigger then the output of the relay goes to the trigger on the back of the starter. make sense?
test it first. on the back of the starter there is *i think* only one small wire. the other is a big thick one. remove the little one and put +12v from the battery on to the STARTER MOTER SIDE with a multimeter lead or something. if it cranks over then the relay will sort you out. if not then the prob is in the starter.
loud click = solenoid works but contacts for motor are worn / dirty
nothing at all = tis broke / bad earth
pissweak click = pissweak starter motor / earth
zzzZZZT CRACK! = electrical fire
pissweak crank = pissweak battery / lead / dirty terminals
healthy cranking noise = completely stuffed
whirring noise = thats the washing machine ya knob. the car is in the shed.

err right...
you can test a startermotor with a screwdriver... or a spanner if you are as unfortunte as me :(
I dropped a spanner on the startermotor once when working on the car (yes i know should always disconnect the battery first (BITE ME!!)) hit just in the right spot for it to crank jolted the car forward and all (left it in gear) i know my starter works fine :P
