No MAS?!

Post by popup »

Hello! Just got a Starion and doing work checking everything over, repairing bits where needed and tidying bits up. The JA, JB and JD thing makes it all pretty confusing with different types and series, and then theres the USA spec models etc etc.

Anyway, I will be getting to the engine later on but I did notice I don't seem to have a MAS sensor! It is a 1986 Narrowbody (flatty?) 2.0 Litre UK spec. Is it usually on the base of the air filter pod? Car runs OK, not really pushed it but felt good!

PerrinSOHC on here also runs his euro-spec starion with no MAS, and says it runs really well without it. I know my Japanese Starion has a big miss just off idle without a MAS connected.

The MAS itself is contained inside the stock air-box, so if you have a stock air-can, with a stock filter inside, you've probably still for the MAS in there too.

It looks like the second photo down in this thread:

http://forums.austarion.com/viewtopic.php?t=12691

There is no connector or space/hole anywhere on the base of the filter housing, I've look all the way around it.
I can't seem to find any spare connector off the loom in the area for a MAF either. The downpipe was replaced and it doesn't have an O2 sensor.
The ECU is a Mitsubishi one, I assume it is standard. I will look at the number on it tomo and maybe get some photos.

Bit of a mystery!

If it looks like the second photo down in that thread, then the MAS is inside the air-box, should have a four wire loom coming out of the bottom of the air-can somewhere.

Unless the MAS has actually been removed, and the air-box put back ppno, which would be very odd.

Issue solved. The MAS wires enter at the front, at the opposite end of the air box to the pipe that leads to the turbo inlet. Couldn't be seen and could only get my hand down there after removing the cruise control actuator. MAS is plugged in too.
