T04B............
ok i have just bean offerd a T04B for my starion. and dont realy know mutch about this turbo but the one iam beeing offerd is new for AU$ 1260 is that a good deal and would this turbo preform well on a almost stock starion(ported ´n polished head with higer comp.)?

I wouldnt pay that much for one, but its not too bad. If you want to run more boost it'll be good, but what you probably want is higher volume not necessarily higher pressure. Also you would need to change your exhaust manifold as the flange will be different. I would go for a tc06 and get it hi-flowed (easy to do with a die grinder) and its heaps cheaper.

you have to make sure it has the correct A/R exhaust housing otherwise you won't make any boost until 5000RPM :?
Also what manifold are you going to use because the Garrett turbo has a different flange? I think a brand new T04B would be around $1200-$1500 AUD from Garrett Australia, one with a built in wastegate would be more.

iam not realy a turbo specalist so i will just ask how do i make sure it has tje correct A/R exhaust housing? i know i will have to make some changes to the exhaust(new mainfold or adapter plate)mrb1 wrote:Ice starion,

You should get something around 0.60 AR exhaust and 0.60 AR compressor housing. There are different wheels etc. Typically you would get a T4/T3 combination. With a T04 compressor housing and wheel, and a T3 exhaust and turbine.
I would consider a full TO4 to be too big for a fairly standard 2.0 Starion engine. Something like a GT28 (T28) like as used on a SR20 Nissan engine would be a good choice (still have to make adapter or manifold, also different again from T04B).

The a/r ratios will be cast into both the compressor wheel housing and the exhaust housing. The compressor a/r will be either 0.50 or 0.60, but the exhaust housing a/r can be a number of different ratios, for eg, 0.63, 0.70, 0.84, 1.00 or 1.06. Generally, the higher the exhaust a/r, the longer it will take to spool up on a given engine. You would also need to know the sizes (or trim) of the compressor and exhaust (turbine) wheels. Note that there are two measurements, the larger blade measurement is the exducer and the smaller blade is the inducer. Garrett turbos have a large number of different combinations which is why all this info is important.

A P-trim exhaust wheel with 0.96 A/R is definitely too big for a sohc 2L. I wouldn't buy it. As hs been said above, a better combination would be either a t3 rear with a to4 front, or see if you can get your hands on a TD05-16G or a TD06.

forget about the TD05-16G it has the TC05 small exhaust wheel. Get a big 16G wheel and fit it to your TC06. Someone will have to machine out your TC06 housing. Or buy a TD06 compressor housing to suit.
These are available on ebay in the US.

Put a TD06 compressor housing with wheel (big 16G, 17C, 19C whatever)on our TC06 and you have an instant TD06.
Yes there are bigger exhaust housing's available for the TD06 but the Starion TC06 housing is heaps bigger inside than the TD05 so it's fine for the 2.0 litre.
Why they put a Cordia sized turbo on the 2.6 Starion amazes me. That's why the 2.6 only made around the same power, sometimes even less depending on model, than the 2.0 cars.

To run mid 10's @128-130 in a Starion (assuming 2900 lbs total weight) would need approximately 480-500rwhp (545-560 engine HP). If you were to reduce the weight of the car to say, 2500 lbs, then you will need 410rwhp (480 engine hp).
NB: these calculations are based on US dyno figures that are known to read approximately 15% higher than AUS dyno's. These figures therefore assume a drivetrain loss of about 15%.
With this in mind, I would realistically say that 400RWHP should get a 2900lb Starion into the 10's @128-130mph (assuming sufficient traction) and about 350rwhp for a 2500lb car.
A 20G will get a Starion well into the 11's. A 25G will allow 10's. As for Garrett turbos, I would use a TO4 60-1 (and I actually do) or a GT35R.
