some years ago I was driving with 5 mates (6 seater kingswood). We drove past someone getting booked by the cops. As we sailed by I yelled "BOOK-EM DANNO" out the window. Maybe 5 mins and 5kms down the road the same police car pulled me over. Officer came to the my window and said "which one of you brain surgeons yelled at us back there?"...... I replied "SIR there are DEFIANTLY NO brain surgeons in here.

$234 for doing 3 k's over the limit?
GPS's are pretty much spot on with speed accuracy.
How did he figure out you were doing 63kmh? Was he driving at the time?
Was it a handheld radar? Was he using his speedo to gauge your speed?
I thought that there was a 4kmh margin of error either way when relating to speedos?
Fight it man! That's a trivial fine, and it's complete and utter crap!

The cop was parked & had a hand held radar pointed out of the window, shooting across 4 lanes of traffic. I was travelling towards him in the LH lane, the furtherest lane from the cop car. He took chase & stopped me 500m down the road. I challenged the accuracy of the reading claiming my GPS was usually very accurate, but this seemed to make him more agitated, claiming there is NO margin of error allowed. He also stated that GPS speedos were not accurate & should not be used as speedos. I haven't got the time or the patience to challenge it, so I will pay the fine & get over it. :(

The only way to discover the limits of possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.

I defended in court in a country town app 30 years ago and won due in part to the paperwork given to me and my solicitor on arrival regarding the accuracy of the police cars speedo
When the senior sargeant (SS) prosicuting was disputing my Fiat 125 speedo reading(dyno checked and dead accurate at 80 &100)and saying that we had been given the test results of the police car my guy said that I had been booked by a commodore and the paperwork was for a Falcon the SS replied that it was an error and when asked how many cars they had he said one and who made the error he said it was him
It cost me a days pay for self and witness and a steak lunch for my solicitor who i picked up on the way :beer LOL

Was coming through a small Victorian country town last weekend & had the GPS speed steady on 60KMh, when the red & blue began flashing in my mirrors. I pulled over to be told that I was doing 63KMh, & received a $234 fine. I'm not happy.
DONT TRUST GPS SPEEDO'S :x :x :x :x
there is 10% speedo error allowed for in the australian design rules, so you can be going an actual 66 in a 60, 77 in a 70 etc before you're in trouble. victoria seems to be flouting this, and getting away with it due to people not being willing to fight it. fight it if u can!

Except that the speedo's are usually 10% the other way. Buy any new sports car I guarantee it "overreads". We considered taking Subaru to court over this and having the cost of our WRX refunded as it will overread on KM's travelled to and thus devalue the vehicle needlessly but decided against it. I still believe we could win this case in a court however and possibly force the companies to consider putting ACCURATE speedo's into cars. If nothing else it'd get a shitload of press coverage AND it would cover why fuckers travel 10% under the speed limit in new cars ALL THE FUCKING TIME. They probably think they're sitting on it but the speedo is up shit creek.
Needless to say, 234 dollars for a 1 point fine? Fail. Illegal in Victoria I'm going to call bullshit on you doing 3 kmh over the limit and say it's more like 13 kmh aka 63 in a 50. MAINLY because a) Vic has state legislation allowing you to travel upto 3 kmh "alleged" (allowing 5kmh given radars have 2kmh accuracy variation) over the limit before you can be issued with a fine. Legally in vic you must be doing 66 in a 60 zone or 56 in a 50 zone etc to even be fined. AND if you do get fined... it's $135 and 1 point. I know, I got one last week. I'll even scan it for you and post it if you really want.
To reiterate, a $234 fine is a 3 point offense which means you were 10+kmh over the limit, not 3.

I would have to find the fine to be sure but I think my wife got clocked at 53 detected 51 alleged in a 50 zone a few years back by a fixed camera, couldn't really contest it since the speedo had shit itself at the time.
Funniest story is the time I was pulled over at about 3am cop asked where I had been and I told him at a friends house in chewton (small town about 3 ks from where he stopped me) at this point the expression on his face became all serious and determined, he proceded to search my car (pretty normal where I grew up in castlemaine) I figured he was looking for drugs, was out of luck all gone.
After tearing my car appart he looks up at me and says SO WHERE ARE THE F*^$ING GUNS a bit surprised at this coment I asked what he was talking about to which he replied YOU SAID YOU'VE BEEN SHOOTING,
After I had finished rolling on the ground laughing at him (literally) he proceeded to slap a defect notice on my car for having an exhaust that was too low and no reversing lights (on a HR holden which never had them in the first place) which ensued in the obvious argument about the need for reversing lights, I eventually gave up and just drove home for a much needed sleep before heading down to the station in the morning.
Pulled on the handbrake really hard to make sure the exhaust was high enough and in I went, Told the cop at the desk the story and once he stopped laughing he just said YEP THAT BLOKES A DICKHEAD and kindly removed the defect from my car.
