Advice/Opinions/Information needed re: Brisbane!
Hi guys,
Would like to pick the brains of you guys that live in Oz.
Got a job offer in Sandgate just out of Brisbane - What's the area like and what about Brissy in general? What's the surf/fishing like?
Also what sort of prices are you looking at for a decent car to run around in - possibly a wagon with a bit of style. Assume that I will also buy a starion as well!
Any other info would be great.
Cheers
David

I work in Banyo which is near sandgate, theres plenty of fishing spots around that area as your near the brisbane river and the port of brisbane. Redcliff is only 20 mins away from that side of brisbane as well. You can fish just from the shore or you can hire a boat.
As for surf its about 45 mins from the gold coast depending on how close you are to the gateway motorway.
The commute to the cbd is always a nightmare if you try and drive in, sandgate rd is always busy during peak hour traffic. Best to catch a train into the city as there are a few train stations close by.

If you were planning to live in Sandgate then it would probably be a 20-30 minute drive to the CDB on a weekend. Weekday would be not much fun I'd imagine & parking price is sky high ($20/day). I understand that the public transport system is not real flash on the North side, but I could be wrong. I'm east/south side (as are GroupARalliart, Kit, StarionVR4).
Surf would be more like 45-60 mins away. At Sandgate you would go to the Sunshine Coast and if you lived East or south the Gold Coast is closer.
Have a look on www.carsales.com.au for prices of cars. www.realestate.com.au is best for house prices (& rent)

As for surf - I assume there is some within 30 minutes or so drive?
And for my partner - what would the commute into the CBD be like each day? easy or a nightmare?

ive just done the very move... well in september...
car prices will give you a hell of a shock, falcons and commodores seem cheap, but anything japanese is a ripoff compared to nz prices. as will the price of rego.. $700 to rego my fairmont... but petrol is only about $1 a litre...
house rents are pretty similar to back home, but quality seems to be much better. oh, and four weeks bond plus two in advance
we were lucky and got jobs within 15 min drive of our house.
my first job here i had to go over the gateway bridge every day, tolls suck. neatly $40 a week just on that.
make sure you have plenty of good id, you need 11ty twillion pieces of paper saying you are you.
helps if you can set up a oz bank back home, and if you have friends or relatives here then get the bank to send a statement or something to that address, pretty much everything here requires proof of address.
aussie tax number is easy, the paperwork will tell you you need so many different types of id, but its bollocks, we did ours over the net, just used our passport number and had a tax number about 5 days later.
stamp duty SUX!! when i bought my car i made sure i had the gst included in the price, but i didnt know about stamp duty, that was another 3.5% on top of the price. if you buy private you should be able to get away with putting down a much lower figure than real and avoid paying as much.
