Engine Knocking - Fixed
cam, if he had done a bearing, you'd hear it when it turnt over. i had the exact same problem last weekend. exactly the same problem. i was some 300 k's from home when it happened. after about 15 mins knock dissapeard. (only knocked over 25% throttle)
then 30 mins latter.... knock...KNOCK...KNOCK!!! BANG!!!!!! SMOKE.......
shit.....fuck....shit....fuck....
long story short, my engine is fucked... i guess at least now i can take her off the road and do everything i want to her before she comes back on.
unfortunately i have to drive a gemini until then ...:-(
my advice. i think it' ignition timing, check your voltage level. the ecu will fail to function properly if it doesn't receive proper power.

Im confused about the ignition timing, because if it was retarded 96 would produce low power, and so would 91 but there would be no knock.
If its too advanced 91 would knock, but 96 would be fine.
However 96 is not fine
and 91 knocks
I will put 96 back in there and see how she runs.
I think it really needs to see a mechanic, Im just out of cash as always.
If the big end is dead, Ill keep my Galant, rip the motor out of the Staz and start fiddling with the idea of 4WD while I find a new motor. As Glynn said, gives you a good chance to do what you wanted to do anyway.

Also if this means anything extra, it has had a recent history of making knock noises occasionally above 5500rpm, but never concerned me as it had little effect on power and was only a few, not really noticeable unless you really listened, and I very rarely take the engine up to redline. This happened only on 91 octane.
Also 96 was rough at low rpm, but 91 was nice at low rpm.
After writing that, Im pondering the vac advance unit as suggested earlier.

Ok, after thinking and pondering, I think its just the cambelt has slipped a few teeth.
I am owed 600 BBX points by a contractor (same as $600NZ), so its off to the mechanics this week to find out for sure, and Ill post the results.

Bad news :(
Mechanics said that knocking noise isn't timing, and my best bet is to buy a new motor.
After 135,000Km the engine is dead. Im paying them to look in to it, double check its not timing, or just a bearing, but he mentioned things like "excessive wear" and "pistons" so eeep
He suggested a new engine.

Fixed.
The ignition timing was out, and when 91 was put in, the knock sensor was reeking havoc on the motor, in fact doing more damage than if it was disconnected.
Tuned and runs fine now, however after compression checks etc the following came of light:
Excessive blowby on pistons due to worn rings
Worn crankshaft (no suprise, somebody had fun in this car, even my driveshaft was twisted and had to be replaced shortly after I got the car, not to mention the gearbox or lack of clutch)
Compression: 125 135 145 125
Mechanic reckons with the noise its making, it'll last a few months to a year before it really gives up the ghost. If I drive it like a boy racer, itll be more like 1-3 months.
So its on its way out, but still goes, boosts, and runs to redline :)
Gives me some time to start saving for some JE's I guess :D

Cheers ProZac, money doesn't like me at the moment so its a bit off yet.
Looks like when I do the rebuild, the only Starion engine part I will use will be the bare block and sump. Was hoping the crank of all things would be fine at least.
So from now on, every dollar I collect goes to building a pile of aftermarket engine bits. Hopefully the pile will be big enough, so when the Starion dies, I can do big rebuld fun :D :D :D

Was going through a roundabout, left lane, car was on the roundabout on the right lane, then kinda stops and starts pulling left, so I hit the brakes, as another car decides to do the same, almost hit a total of 3 cars in the period of 5 seconds becuase none of them knew what the term 'how to drive' meant, nobody even looked to check if the lane was free.
So once I got around them, I floored it and slammed third, doing a nice wheelspin. I was very very annoyed, released a bit of anger on to my tyres :)
Probably not the best to do when my mechanic warned me to look after my engine, but sometimes people on the road today make such amazing bad decisions, and dont even look where they're going.

Yeah speaking of which before i had my motor rebuilt i had the compression test done and I got 115 114 20 117, if all pistons are giving off the same compression your car still should run ok, (even though a lot less power, but ok if you have no money) but with uneven compression thats not good all usually meaning a damaged piston or uneven wear on the rings.
My third piston had a piece blown out from under it where the rings were seated.
