I have always used semi synthetic Penzoil. When I got my engine rebuilt the guy recommended semi synthetic but not to thin either.

Read up on flat tappet cams and zinc. You basically have to find a quality Engine oil in the old specification. Very difficult. You generally have to buy the "extended drain interval/long life" type of the new "SM" grade Oils to find enough zinc in it so that it doesnt ruin your cam.

Scorpy... thanks for the advice.

Yes zinc in the oil is good for our flat tappet cam.

I spoke to Camtech (as I have one of their stage 2's)
He recommended Penrite HPR30. On reading that it is a High quality 20-60 mineral oil with a good amount of zinc.

Doing some more research AMSOIL do a full synthetic 20-50 race oil that has a very good zinc content. It's more expensive and a bit hard to get but probably the best oil for our engines. :beer

any of the australian castrol synthetics are good aswell. most australian synthetics are fine. articles you read on the net may not be relevant to australian oils.....

I've used Redline in the past, but it's ridiculously expensive! It is rather good though!

I use Mobil1 0W30 in my rally car, and it works well, not that I've driven it that much... :?

HPR30 was what I always used to use in Starions, and I have no complaints about it's performance and value for money!

My mechanic recommends BP Corse Plus. I might give that a go for my next oil change, but it's so hard to find.

I have also heard very good things about AMSOIL.

I've always used Penrite HPR30. As Nachoman said, value for money in comparison to other oils, and no complaints in the performance department.

I use penrite HPR 40 but in a 4g54 N/A at the last rebuild everything apart from piston rings were mint
as some here Know my car also know its only driven quitely on W/Es
so 4 years running at up to 7000+ as a track car and not a mark on a bearing

ring wear is due to high piston speeds
so the penrite seams to do it work ok

just a thought
