BIG LSD 3.9 DIFF GEARS WANTED

Post by BILLLAKSTINS »

Hello guys and gals, new to the forum although have bought gear from Oscar in the USA but where did he go? You all have some very impressive Starions on this forum that area credit to you. my problem is>>>>I have a tarmac rally staz fitted with the big lsd running 4.8 gears. we ran this combo in last years Classic Adelaide Rally (pre 1990 cars) and it was quick except no top end(190ks) the fast sections require 250ks to run with the gun 911's so we are in dire need of 3.9's that will give us 241ks top speed. can anybody assist please, are any big lsd carrier 3.9's 4 sale. 4.2's second choice. We knocked off plently of the bigger budget ( up ourselves) Porsche teams last year and plan to come back and give then a real going over in the underdog heavier Starion. Cheers Bill 0417 882 781 ( Adelaide)ps.. thanks to Alan for getting me on the network tonight.

sorry to hear about Oscar & thanks for the L200/Triton tip Dave, I have basicly finished the car ready for testing and the diff is the last piece in the puzzle. Hanging out for 3.9's but will go with 4.2 L200's gears if/when we run out of time. Where is the Redzone workshop? have heard about serious quality work out of your place!

cheers for the compliment :beer my workshop is located in maroochydore in queensland, about 100km north of brisbane. i think the 2.0 and 2.6 L200's have different ratios. i'd be checking workshop manuals etc for specs, should give you an idea of what to look for..

ive got a 3.9 in mine (not willing to part with) but id say a 4.2 will be better suited to what your after. Unless your racing on long straights all the time.
-JA Starion with JD bits , Forged engine, Heaps of mods (parked up)
-BFII XR6 Turbo Ute , Here comes 400hp for 2k :p
-77 Mazda 323 drag car. 13bt rotary project.

Id be keen on a 4.2 set up as Ill be running the Mazda gear box and Im sure thats what they have...

By "the big diff" do you mean the 8.5 inch? cause the widebodys that had 6 bolt axles had a 9 inch. The first starions had a 8 inch diff.

The 8.5 inch 4.2 gears are what Im after.

here in the states the diffs were the same except the 88-89 had 6bolt axle shafts. there were lsd and non lsd diffs tough and different variations of torque tubes.

As for gears over here we use gears from the trucks. Mighty max/dodge d50, montero/raider(not sure of the nomenclature over there). You can still get the gears new and there was a company that was selling them(fuel injection specialties), but i dont know if they are still around. I believe the 3.9 fits the stock housing and the 4.11 required some clearance but if you are running 4.8 id say you have the clearance. The only difference is the back lash spacing id different on the truck diff so if you buy a kit for a truck you will need additional back spacing.

Montero with leaf springs: 83-87: Varies from year to year on what trucks got what.

4.625 = MB185463
4.875 = MB527147

Montero 3.0 with coil suspension: 89-91: all years one option.

4.636 = MR124857
4.272 = MR296349

Montero 3.5 SOHC V6 24V: 01-02

Can't pull information up on this one yet.

Montero 3.5 SOHC V6 24V: 03

Montero Sport: 2.4: 2WD: 96-99: only one option for these years.

Thanks for that info, i have the large housing diff ( purchased of a guy who was trying to fit the lsd carrier into a Scorpion????. It was all in bits and the 4.8 gear set was in the box also, i just machined up the side carrier spacers that were missing. Oscar then supplied the shorter torque tube to suit and i am using the 4 bolt shafts. Im assuming all the commercial utes L200, Triton and Mighty boy are all fitted with these larger gear sets. I have tracked down a 90 2wd Triton 4 wrecking, its vin number lists an OE 4.2 ratio, when i get time I will strip and measure for compatability and post the results. Cheers,

i had an 86, 86 and older had a little different body style here in the states but they are hard to find pictures of. They came in 2wd and 4wd varieties, 2.0l, 2.6l and the later ones also had 3.0v6. same platform as the montero/pajero with extended frames i thnk.
