I use 3Bond sealant, stays a bit flexable, resistant to oil/petrol/etc...., on my race engine i lapped the cover & pump on flat glass & 1000grit paper, then assembled it.

The oil pump has no gasket or silicon on it, and there shuld be a gasket for the timing cover, put that on dry aswell.

I use (lately) locktite grey sealent 27901, from repco. I'd seal the front cover real good as well, i be pulling the motor from my narrowbody mainly to replace front cover gasket (and an excuse to fit a silvia turbo)
