Yesterday started to tun-up my engine 4G54B 1988 ( I want to put forged pistons , eliminate ballanceshaft and tun-up head ). I opened it and .....
all pistons are dead , one rod dead , crank dead too :? / Turbo are changed allready but not tested on thiss engine.
Dillema -
1) Change all what are broken = 2300$ with work ( In Ukraine :D )
2) Put another angine 4G63B 16V Turbo one of last generations ( Engine include all beefing - starter , ECU , etc. ) = 2500$
BUT.... Can this 4G63B normally stand on my car if know I have 4G54B?
Somebody did it? How? It is easy or not? It is real or not.
If my transmision 5-mechanic from 2.6 fit to 2.0?

the later type 4G63 DOHC engines as out of evo 4 onwards lancers etc have no rearwheel drive engine mount boss on the left hand side of the block, all of the dohc blocks are the "narrow" bell housing width aswell, u can however install an evo 1-3 type engine relatively easily by using a CUSTOM flywheel (4G52 diameter ring gear, 7 bolt centre) and a mitsubishi scorpion (sold as a sapporo in europe) 5 speed gearbox (has the narrow pattern). u will also need to swap over the selector shafts etc and selector housing to get the shifter in the right spot for your starion.
note u will need to modify the water outlet on back of the head and change the location of the throttle body to face it towards the front! also redrill the engine mount bracket bolt holes 12mm further forward and 12mm spacers between the gearbox mount and the gearbox, as otherwise the crank angle sensor which pokes out the back of the head will foul the firewall!
so yes it is doable, but a lot more work and expense than rebuilding the 4G54 2.6 litre. the dohc 4G63 is a much sweeter engine though, with greater overall power potential, lighter weight set further back as the engine is very short, and more performance parts available!
good luck on whichever path u wish to take, Dave. :beer
