Are you looking Java applet chat or telnet chat or what?
java applets are good chats depending on the applet, telnet chats are good (used them alot) they are alot more private than java applets and are able to be a bit more selective about the people who use it.
if you want to chat, i have set up a web based chat thing to connect to irc, nothing to download, just click yes when the security warning comes up, and type in your user name.. that simple.. a good thing about this is that people who use mirc can still use that and join the same channel, and people who dont use mirc can just use the web based one..
