Woohoo Cracked Pistons & an Update
Woohoo Cracked Pistons & an Update
Hey guys found out today i have 1 cracked piston been like that for a while apparently. what i am concerned about it the replacement cost of a piston, the shops are closed and i am heading for sydney early tomorrow, so can someone give me an idea how much a new stock piston would be or even a good condition 2nd hand piston??
Or Actually how about a set of new forgies, how much?
yes i have ralliart pistons but that whole motor is now off at a engine shop in melbourne getting re-built.
I am also out fitting my car with a shit load of new stuff interior wise
fully auto timer, new mechanical boost guage, a boost controller that sits between the turbo and wastegate and replacing all vacuum hose again this time with almighty hi-temp silicone.
I had a neumatic boost adjust knob in the cabin which is quite shit and heaps of play in it and inaccurate, plus the lines running to that and the current mech boost guage are very big compared to standard 4mm vac hose i would say the internal diameter of these hoses would be about 8mm which is not real good when running a few 5 foot lengths. anyways all that is about to go.
I am going for a mighty TC05 turbo as i want to check out its goodness as i am only running 12PSI. I will be running an EVO 4 cooler and bigger pipes. How ever i will be running my hi-flowed TC06 when i get the other motor back.
Oh yeah an another issue with my car was that the knock sensor wire at the ecu was chopped, so the sensor wasn't working top retard the timing so thus somtimes when i thought i was pushing 12psi i was infact actually pushing 18psi due to the shitty pipes and water filled crapped out guage.
All is fun fun, anyways. I will give another update later on after i have new pistons etc.
P.S Hey Wantsom can you PM your phone number to me please or Cookie can you PM his phone number to me so i can organise to pickup some stuff from him?

Bad luck about the engine camotec, i had a similar thing happen to me late last year. If you are thinking about going hypereutectic pistons might as well go the forgies, cause when u think about it an extra 600 or so isnt that much more for a much better piston. If you going to get it done get it done right the first time, trust me i just rebuilt my engine with hypereutectic pistons and i regret not spending a litle more and getting the forgies, cause when you consider it, the labour costs of a rebuild is quite high and generally if u are going hyper pistons you are after a performance engine (more than stock) of some sort and i believe forgies fit this ideal more as you can run more boost with more reliability.
If you dont already have a tc05, i think u shouldnt waste your money, you would be better going to a td05 in my opinion as they would be a much better designed turbo.
Anyway good luck with it all and keep us updated.

Well I already have the TC05 as a spare. (going on as a to do)
The Hi-Flowed Turbo TC06 i have is being rebuilt.
However I also like smaller turbos as i like quick spool and good all round responsivness. and for my needs of only running 12PSI till i get a new ECU prolly closer to the end of the year now.
What i am basically doing is making a reliable road car with the one i have while still giving it a few extras.
The rebuilt motor with forgies will be going in another starion shell for offroad use only. So if anyone has a white staz for sale let me know :)
it dosen't need interior or motor. There now you all know my secret

I was talking to a guy who used to rally starions, and he said not to buy expensive forgies. but to use Evo 2 pistons as they will fit with a small modifaction to the conrods. he also said that all the rally EVO lancers use EVO 2 pistons as they are the strongest. :o
now here is the good bit apparantly they are fairly cheap arround $80 each. from ralliart. the expensive bits are the rings, he did say but i forget how much

alos, davidbek is selling a highflowed tco6 for a good price (probably less than what a rebuild will cost you at least). ;)

broken Pistons
Don't ya hate that, did the same thing to mine 6mths ago, wiesco pistons are $800- $1000, if you contact APC in brisbane and talk to nick ( the owner) he will look after you, any forged piston you buy will be for the VR4 engine, the bowl is different to starion units, will post pics later on this thread for you, the HYper. pistons i believe are the VR4 units as well. What does this mean to You? the overall compression ration will end up at 8.0:1 -8.5:1, this can lead to a dough bottom end responce on accerelation, the fix is a little more ignition advance( from 8 BTDC to 12-15 BTDC) have done this on a engine i rebuilt for a mate down the coast and it works
30PSI,2.4L! Wolf 3D Ver 4. VR4 Head.
Thanks for the comments and thoughts guys,
I appreciate it heaps.
I have found a set of replacement pistons now and things are underway.
Wantsom sorry dood i thought you had a manifold for sale, dunno why i thought that.
Hey Charlie thanks for the scoop on the lithgow staz i will be checing it out later on this arvo on my way back from sydney :) :beer

Re: broken Pistons
how does it effect top end? and will it be too much advance if running 1bar?Starion VR4 wrote:the overall compression ration will end up at 8.0:1 -8.5:1, this can lead to a dough bottom end responce on accerelation, the fix is a little more ignition advance( from 8 BTDC to 12-15 BTDC) have done this on a engine i rebuilt for a mate down the coast and it works
Re: broken Pistons
This is complete BS :glare: . The standard compression is 7.6:1. Going to 8.0-8.5:1 will only increase bottom end (and off boost) performance. With the higher compression you MAY have to RETARD the timing a little more under boost (depending on intercooler arrangement, amount of boost and type of fuel being used). If it has a doughy bottom end using those pistons you may have less than 7.6:1 (standard). Feels doughy sounds like lower compression to me, seems to need more timing again sounds like lower compression to me.Starion VR4 wrote: the overall compression ration will end up at 8.0:1 -8.5:1, this can lead to a dough bottom end responce on accerelation, the fix is a little more ignition advance( from 8 BTDC to 12-15 BTDC) have done this on a engine i rebuilt for a mate down the coast and it works
Seems to need more boost to go the same as it did before perhaps, again a sign of lower compression.

I spoke to Mal Crockenberg today, he is the Ralliart dealer in Perth.
He said EVO 2 Pistons fit straight into The 4G63 SOHC and are good for 1.5bar or 21psi. the only mod required is to have the little end of the conrod machined 1mm bigger, then use the EVO gudgen pin.
These pistons were used in Ross Dunkertons 4G63 colt
cost is $100.00 per piston and $200.00 set of rings (4)
they are not forged but are very high quality, and are used in all EVO's when rallying including the later ones.
