Cloth Trim

If I use black carpet paint on a cloth door trim (the middle bit, its not carpet or vinyl, but the velvet type cloth stuff) will it look good or come out horrible and make me cry?

I want to change the center from faded red to a rich black.

Might go to a fabric store tomorrow, so if anybody knows of a more ideal product please let me know so I can have a look for it. It needs to be kind of spray or rub on as I can't put the entire door trim in a bucket of fabric dye.
