Replacement for stock MAP sensor

I've been advised by my mechanic (Malcolm Crockenberg) that the MAP sensor in the Galant has had it. Unfortunately, these cannot be purchased new from Mitsubishi anymore. I refer to the steel boxed MAP sensor, not the black plastic one.

Now other than replacing this one with another of the same vintage (and possibly also dodgy), what are my options for replacement. Is it possible to use the less venerable plastic unit from the later Cordia or Starions? Prefer not to go to a full computer replacement just yet, would just like good boost control without the drop outs.

I got some good news.

The MAP sensor in the Wolf 3D works well with the Galant... :)

Thanks, but that would mean the upgrade to the Wolf which won't be happening. BTW, we talking V3 or V4 of the Wolf 3D?

The Plastic box ones are just as prone to failure, and much harder to get. The Steel boxed ones are usually fixable. How is it poked?

By poked I assume you mean stuffed. From what Malcolm has advised, the diaphragm or whatever inside may have had it??

All I know is that I get a cough every now and then when cruising and the boost guage twitches at the same time.

Sounds about right... Couple of people here have had success prying them apart, and using a bike typre repair kit to repair the diaphrams. Either that ir someone is bound to have one for sale? GL man, theres something about the look of your car i quite like... The wheels are nice on it.

Thanks dude. And yeah, I think it's the wheels. Found out last night they're Panasport Formula One FS lightweight rims. Also just replaced the steering box and wow what a difference.

alternatively, if it's the diaphragm that's stuffed,then just buy a bicycle repair kit and fix the hole.

Either fix wont cost you more than a couple of dollars

check the condition of the circuit board as well when it's apart

Ah, I found it. Missed it when I checked that site out yesterday. Well it all seems straight forward, and I have a few cluey auto electrical type people I know just in case. JPC is going to give it a looking to as well.

Well, JPC came over last night and showed me how to take apart the map sensor and give it a good once over. He even brought over a set of new o-rings and we replaced all the old crusty ones in there. No electronic faults, and the unit sealed up great once we were done.

Took a quick spin and boost feels more responsive that before. Still getting an ever so slight hesitation on cruise, so we'll check out the AFM next.
