The fuel pump doesn't start unless the ECU thinks the engine is cranking. There are two ways to easily see if the fuel pump is working:

1. Apply 12V to the orphan connector near the coil/igniter. This is the fuel pump test lead. On a series 1 JA, this is a round plastic 2 pin connector (usually with a dummy plug in it), black wire and black wire with white stripe - get the polarity right! On a series 2 JA, it's a single wire with a small rectangular connector (black wire with a white stripe). This should start the fuel pump straight away.

2. Disconnect the power to your starter motor and turn the key as if starting the car.

Either way, if the fuel pump is working you'll hear it start and run.
