Dunno about in NZ, but over here, you're not allowed to record audio in public without permission, but video is perfectly legal - hence security camera's, and why they never have sound.
So a speed camera is perfectly legal, and the police recording your converstaion without your consent - illegal.

Oh, and i've never had bad experiences with police the couple of times i've been pulled over. I was friendly to them, and they were friendly back
