No I don't have a problem, this isn't world series cricket kiwi.

Aftermarket Starion parts availability is an absolute nightmare we all know, any supply which helps keep these old girls on the road is a god send.

And for what it's worth philosophical, I'd consider any other fiberglass supplier that promoted straighter/stronger "Redzone" spoilers next time I'm in the market for one.

Good on you Sonic for actually getting a batch available for market and let us all get on with saving old cars.

Wouldn't Aerotech have copied these in the first place??? Alot if not all of their aftermarket kits are copies.

If not and they are of their own design people saying they should be able to be copied because buying some and shipping them is too expensive is absurd.

Why have the photos dissappeared?? I don't think Kiwi is out of place here I just don't think Aerotech will give a fuck and neither do I, they are ugly skirts in my opinion.

Sonic back in July you bought a set of Aerotech side skirts off dirty sanchez (http://forums.austarion.com/viewtopic.php?t=13077) and now 3 months later you are selling side skirts which are obviously moulded off Aerotech side skirts and regardless of what you say about them not being quite the same you have still used Aerotech Design and Interlectual Property in producing the ones you have for sale.

I wouldn't have a problem with this and would commend you for doing this if you were reproducing a product that wasn't available anymore but as we all know Aerotech are still alive and well here in NZ and the side skirts can still be easily purchased from them. None of us would think (or I hope we wouldn't think) about buying one of Redzones front spoilers so we could take a copy of it so we can reproduce and sell them so why is it different from Aerotech?

This makes me ashamed to be part of the Starion community and I have emailed a link to this posting to Aerotech for their information.
So what , if someone copyed the Aero tech side skirts , if they got a patent on the skirts , they still have a small chance in court , not something to kick up a fuss about .

Sonic, I apologize for saying you took a mold for these off the Aerotech skirts, obviously I don’t actually know that you did that so I shouldn’t have said it.

However this does not alter the fact that you have copied (intentional or not) the Aerotech design when producing your skirts for sale. You yourself have already admitted to this, you said and I quote from you “They are NOT quite the same. But Close” In this statement you have already admitted that the designs are “close” and further to this by saying they are “not quite” the same you have again by default said that they are almost the same. For a design to be copied it doesn’t have to be exact to the millimeter, if the overall shape, proportions and intent are the same then it can be said that the design has been copied. I quote from the Webster Online Dictionary “Copy - An imitation, transcript, or reproduction of an original work”. In terms of copyright law a design doesn’t have to be exact to every last detail but if a reproduction can fool the average person into thinking they have the original then a design has been copied.

For those people wanting pictures of the side skirts in question:

The Aerotech item as originally posted by Starzila and later posted by Tomsum

And the item being sold by Sonic as posted by Hoongirl and agreed by Sonic

To my untrained eye I can not tell the difference between these two, if you were to give me these two photos and I didn’t know which one was which I would have no idea which one is Aerotech’s and which one is Sonic’s. I challenge anyone to stay that one of these isn’t a “copy” of the other one and that they are both original designs.

I’m all for people who produce new items and reproductions for the Starion and gladly will and do support them by buying items off them more the better for any items for our Starions. But again, the situation here is that the Aerotech skirts are not out of production or hard to get just ring or email Aerotech, pay for the items and for postage and they’re all yours. I’m not saying they are cheap if you need to include postage overseas but as Tomsum has already shown if you get together on a group buy and combine the postage they are not that expensive.

In terms of the design of the side skirt, Aerotech have advised me today that these parts are covered by their Copyrights and that they do have actions they could take, however like a lot of cases like this the cost of taking action is not worth it based on the number of potential sales they are likely to loose. So Sonic feel free to produce and sell these if you think this is right but how about using your talents to come up with a new design none of us have seen yet.

I’m sorry if people don’t like what I’m saying here but in a community as small as the Starion World, copying items of other people and selling them so they potentially don’t get the sale is going to leave us in a situation of even less people coming up with new and original parts for the Starion because it just won’t be worth their while to do any products based on the likely future returns they will get from these.

And why am I so hot on this, I have friends who have Patented and Copyrighted new ideas and designs only to be ripped off by other people down track reproducing their work and to find out that the cost of legal action just isn’t worth it in the long run. I rest my case and my rant and rave will stop here.

Thanks for that Kiwi but one would think that there is not a lot one can do with skirts so aren't they bound to look similar ???

in the top picture the upper part of the skirt looks to be the same size and in the lower pic the upper part of the skirt seems to vary in length depending which way round it goes.

they look similar but maybe not quite the same. OLD FART is right there's only so much you can do anyway with a skirt
