hey everybody,
i got a holden 202 black motor that i just put into my vk efi,...
now, the main reason why i ask on this forum if you ask is because i have been asking on holden forums and well i have probably had the best run on advice out of this forum when something went wrong with my stazza, ...
now as the story goes, i put the new motor in,
the motor has spark, has compression, no vac leaks, and has fuel pressure,
timing is correct aswell,
now the motor cranks over, but doesn;t run,
as i pulled the rocker cover off the head i noticed that there is little movement with the valves (about 2mm), with the valves on number 6 cyl moving up and down about 8mm, and the rest moving about 2mm,
now initially, i thought oil pressure might be the reason why the rods aren;t pushign the rockers,
i pulled out the oil pump and the oil filter was dry- the oil pump was rooted
and i stuck the new one on, and well i still ahve the same problem of when the car is try ing to start the valves are only opening up about 2mm...
am missing something here? what else could be stopping it from starting :(?
cheers
no it aint a 4g63, but i need advice :D -holden 202

after alot of ff cars, I think it is time for me to try a fr :O
maybe they are not black motor push rods ??? (too short)
have you filled the lifters (with oil)(put them in a bucket of oil)??
is oil coming out of the push rod tops???
are you sure they are hydrolic lifters ???
are you sure the oil pump is driving off the cam ???
do you have a rooted cam gear ???
is a cam bearing rooted and dropping oil ???
do you have the right oil pickup for the sump ???
could the oil pickup have spat the pickup gasket-to-block ???
are you useing gaskets b-tween oil pump and block (the right ones)??
did you fill the filter b4 putting it on ???
im going for oil pump clearance or pushrod length or just maybe
YOU HAVE SAID that it is a efi VK right ???- well way back when the
earth was cooling and I was a grease monkey, I can remember
that if a VK didnt start::::::: ::::: you would look at the dash
to see if the Temp guage was showing HOT, and if so
this would stop the engine from starting because the temp sender was
telling the ecu that it was beyond running temp.
ALL THAT MEANT was thtathe temp wire was off at the sender or bad
conection at the sender.
SHIT Im gonna leave this old school shit to you now
Cheers:Phil.

nah the rods aren't bent, and yes they are the correct rods,
i couldn;t remove the hydraulic lifters from the motor when the bottom end was out, probably carbon buildup,
however i did fil them with oil,
the lifters are moving, but not to their full extent :(
cam gear is fine , havent checked out th cam though :(
yer this is an efi vk head, on a carby bottom end
gaskets are fine well dunoe what else it could be :S

okay,
car now starts :D
however, the car only runs while the key is on start,
if i let the key go after it starts and it goes back onto ON the the car just dies
i am pretty sure that i have ignition in ON, because i have the wipers moving and stuf,
however it doesn;t usually charge up everyting like it usually did previously, like charge battery, fuel pump buzzing etc..
what would be causing the the car to not have the fuel pump and battery check not working in ON, when it usually should be?
cheers

get somebody to pull the selinoid wire off
when the car is running (so you can check connection)
check all the underbonnet connectors/plugs
have alook at your ALT connectors first then full
fuel connectors and have a good look at the selinoid
starter wire and make sure it doesnt have a second
spike that a common power wire goes to.
next look at your dash and make sure ALL your guages show Working. and let the key go to the on possition (hope it still running)
I think theres an Accessory wire off somewhere (????????)
cheers:Phil.

Re the starting issues - I was having a chat with a Holden freak today at a Hillclimb. He said rightly or wrongly that if the VK computer senses low oil pressure too (well when it's running) it'll shut the engine down. So a suggestion, grab an oil pressure gauge and screw it in place and get an assistant to crank it and leave it cranking to see if your oil pressure picks up.
It does sound like you've got oil pressure problems, if you're not getting enough oil to the top of the motor, then obviously the hydraulic lifters won't work properly either.
Did you pack your (new?) oil pump with grease before you fitted it? If not, it could already be cactus.
This might also seem like a stupid suggestion, but check your oil level.

yer mate
replaced the oil pump with a new one and packed it with grease before i put it in,
car definitely has oil pressure now as valves open heaps and oil is everywhere :D
however problem still remains that the car only remains running while the key is in the start position :(
