Steering box - rebuild(?)
OK, am starting to get pretty sick of the 10deg of movement in my steering. Did all Starion's come with power steering? Mine's the Galant, so would assume the same steering setup, has anyone had their steering box rebuilt? And at a stretch, has anyone adapted powersteering from a Starion (assuming they came with it at some point) to their non-power car?
Barney (Ashly) - I know you can help out on this one.
Cheers

Yes Starions came with power steering. You should be able to swap it around between Starion/Sigma/Galant/Scorpion without too many hassles. They're all very similar. A rebuild will probably cost you a lot. I had quotes ranging between $350 and $800 . I ended up taking it to fulcrum and they checked it and adjusted it, cost $30.

i have a steering box at home, when I pulled the POS out it had nolathane bushes in excellent cond and all ball joints ect have good grease boots on them. so i suspect it was all rebiult not too long ago. for sale if you want, I was going to put it in the 15T press at work and video tape it getting squished then send it to Mitsubishi.
I figured out the meaning of life, and since then every day just gets worse.

Hmm, could be interested. Can you take another look at it for me and see if there's any play in it and let us know. Is this a power steering box or heave-ho steering box?

watch that adjustment, if the worm inside is damaged in anyway, like rust or severe wear, over adjusting it might cause the steering to lock up! but i do remember that the steering in that car was the best steering box i had ever felt, as for play, i think there was only 2 or 3 deg on the input shaft, which is good? i think. anyway, will have a look next time im there and let you know, the whole setup is for sale exept the pitman arm which had an argument with my grinder :D

Brendan sorry about the late reply but have only just viewed the post
I have a spare Steering box here. I also have a pump.
I hade mine rebuilt by Carvell automatic transmissions, it cost $170. it only needed a seal kit and a reset though. The box feels alot tighter with very little movement. But i haven't felt it with the engine running yet as the head is still not on :(
Now they did say something interesting. To adjust the starion box you adjust the screw outwards not inwards :?
As far as converting to P/s it could be a big exercise as you will need the P/S box, pipe work, oil cooler, pump and mounting bracket, new crank & balance shaft pully (maybe), belt, maybe a different pitman arm. and alot of panadol
Try adjusting it first and see how it feels, BTW if you adjust it to much the steeering will feel heavy and wont self center.
