Well I'm gonna bolt on the biggest turbo I can find and I'll make 600 all wheel HP at 40psi on 98 RON fuel and run low 9's

It's coming... just you wait!

28psi boost to make 293hp, also very laggy with a short power curve.

Typical SOHC graph, the single cam cant allow enough air in the engine, hence the power falls off in high RPM

Ash

I know it will start and argument, but have a close look at the graph.
Typical Chris Collier setup though........

I'm sure the Works Starions' power-curve was different

The SOHC Engine will allow enough air through it, but I think you really need to know what you are doing more so then with DOHCs :beer
The SOHC will flow the Air but not a as good as the DOHC higher RPM. Believe me i have been down both tracks. My DOHC with a 36mm restrictor revs harder then the SOHC with custom manifolds, big cam and HKS Turbo.

actually i think selling something you have spent years building to make perfect is pretty short sighted and immature. why piss all that money away by offloading a modified car for a quarter of what it owes u? as long as ur not gonna die if u dont, why do it? just for the record, i think garry can afford to have a family AND keep kit..

i have a few mates who sold their "pride and joy" because of females etc, ended up pissing THAT money away and then wanted their car back after the relationship turned to shit. i'm NEVER selling my gemini, too many man hours invested in it. F**K THAT! i dont look at the money so much as 3 years (and counting) of my man hours spent getting everything perfect..

Great answer,i just bought a brand new Lancer vrx Black for the misses and paid in cash if i go broke my $100,000 van my $100,00 worth of equipment would go first then my new lancer then my furniture then the 2 starions in that order. I guarantee that Redzone would sell every thing before that Gemini 2 thats why we are car freaks.

dyno figures

Post by davidbek95 »

very true dyno figure do not mean much,as dyno is a tuning tool, but u have to admit its good to say my car has got such & such horse power at the wheel as mine does just read over 300@whp.also scare the shit out of me some times when not expecting the power. :o :o
P.S. yes i have prove of a dyno sheet but i will not reveal the tuner is,

less talk, more action

Post by bodeo »

The people who make real power have respect for other people and their cars, here are some examples:
- Kit knows what is involved in building and maintaining a quick streetable show car, he doesn’t run others down and is happy to talk about his car
- Redzone has a lot of experience with starions and runs a good honest business
- Chris Collier builds fast streetable cars, borbet, mean4, Con’s circuit car, Johnny in NSW, Dave in Qld and when he enters cars in the summernats people want to cut him down
- starion4me makes a genuine 350rwhp, see his mph down the quarter and this backs up the dyno figures

There are probably a few others, but these are the guys that I know of.

Rather than run cars down people should be focussing on improving and maintaining their cars.

Haha Dave,

I once drove home from heathcote on race fuel which adds an extra 70-80rwhp over pump gas through advancing the timing (no additional boost required) - thats over 350 at the treads but more importantly it equates to roughly an extra 15% power right throughout the rev range. Semi slicks are skittish with that amount of power.

It was fun but at $10 per litre you'd want it to be.

Note: not a good idea to drag race running semi slicks, the tyre sidewalls don't have enough flex resulting in severe axel tramp. On a plus note ball bearing turbo's are f**ing awesome, i could never go back to the lag, lag, boost rollers.

Dave - I heard that you wound the boost down, whats going on? Im a bit concerned. If i could afford it i'd drive around on race fuel.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the compliment - i think im becoming more motivated to get involved in the starion community (this is my 50th post over a 3 year period).

Not a bad idea re the boost, its worth while feeling out how the car goes in the warmer climate. I heard that your drive up to qld went smoothly, you'd have been due for an oil change after the 3,000km trip up there :)

Im proud of my car too, went to pick a part today looking for rocker cover clips, spare timing cover (found one in good nick from an L300 van), and other random parts, and also ended up taking an L300 manifold with an optical dizzy, ignition module and loom. Chris has been getting carried away with the powder coating again so I changed the engine pullies and p/steering bracket with nice silver powder coated ones and replaced the bonnet latch with a nice zinc coated one last weekend - It has come up looking a treat :)

Also, im weighing up whether to run it up on the dyno at the autosalon at the end of this month. Some of the melbourne guys should come along and give it a go - Autosalon is a bit gay but good exposure for the starions.

Cheers

True, you would want to be married and over the car phase before you sold your pride and joy....... but to date every single guy I know that has had kids has always changed their priorities about whats important to them and I don't think you or Gary will be able to be the exception to the rule :) :beer You'se will keep 'em for a long time, no doubting that, but when the right offer comes along down the track from the right enthusiast, I think it'll be a very easy decision to make.
Computer games don't affect kids I mean if PacMan affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music :D

We have now had confirmation of this "400Kw Starion" in the build so we'll obviously keep a close eye on its progress :beer

bodeo, your starion is one one the nicest i've ever seen... Out of interest how difficult was the 5 stud conversion?

Thanks Glen,

5 stud conversion is relatively easy, you will need:
1. Front and rear hubs from a widey
2. Rear discs from a widey
3. Either widey front brakes or a brake upgrade - i'd consider consider Oscars Wilwood / BMW disc package
4. A set of either the 8" front and 9" rear or 7" front and 8" rear widey wheels - both fit the same as the 8" rears sit out just as far but don't fill inside the wheel arch as well
5. To lip your wheel arches

For the cost to bring calipers and discs over i'd look at doing a brake upgrade, there are a few viable options when it comes to this and I may eventually sell mine to run an AP racing setup.

I'd also steer away from braided lines, you don't need them on a street car, they tend to leak and the one piece kits just dont look right. if you go the wilwoods then you can get an adaptor to allow your existing brake lines to screw into the adaptor which screws into the caliper.

Its also worth considering what will happen if you damage a wheel, ie. the 8" and 9" SHP wheels are rare even in the US (particularly the fronts whcih are most susceptable to damage), you may need to wait months to get a replacement. I'd try to go 7" fronts and 9" rears as both are relatively easy to source and you can buy 3x7" and 3x9" so that you have a spare.

Cheers
Troy
