I had my radiator changed to a three row core for $350 when it was time for a new one. Also, a few weeks ago I finally removed the a/c condensor and it ha made a significant improvement in the water temps.

the air conditioner condenser, might give that a go as well. i'm still waiting on a price for the radiator, one of the apprentices just had his done on his VK 6cyl and cost him $127. Dont know if thats good or bad. I'm looking at the bigger core as i might be doing some engine work, along with the turbo.

Project to reduce engine bay temp

Post by MelbStazz »

i was reading a back issue of ZOOM magazine and i came across a article that was about engine temps specifically those with a large turbo.
The main point of the article was that of a heat shield. Looking in my engine bay i noticed that my heat shield was a little worse for wear, so tomorrow i am making up a new one out of aluminium.
According to the article a decent heat shield placed 2cm away from the turbo can reduce temps 2 cm away from 94deg to 47deg.
That was enough convincing for me, i'll keep you posted on how it goes and the result of under bonnet temps. :D
i've also given the radiator and cooling system a really good flush out, and a new water pump's in.

Problem solved

Post by MelbStazz »

Well the new radiator is finally in and along with it new hoses, thermostat and housing, water pump and clamps. :D
I must say that the car now runs smoother and way cooler than before. The reason for the over heating was the radiator core had collapsed over time ( no wonder the coolant looked so bright and unused :x ). The new radiator cost me $270 all schmicko. So the new radiator and the opening of the bonnet vents as brought the engine bay temps down considerably. Can't wait to see the result of the new heat shield.
Still haven't completed heat shield, as i have been busy getting the body ready for a paint job. :D

mine's running a lot hotter then it used to, even for a cold run thru the hills, i park the car and a minute later the thermo cuts in as it hits half way. I had also never seen the gauge go higher then half way until this year :S looks like i'm up for a flush. hopefully its just something from when it was rebuilt and clogged and don't need to get a new one alltogether.

was your old pump shagged melbstazz?

kewl running

Post by MelbStazz »

tis drew here aka melbstazz :D
the water pump seeemed to be o.k as there was no severe play or looseness on the shaft and it all moved pretty smoothly. I just thought that while i was at it i might as well do the whole cooling system in the one hit ( it also helps that i'm in the trade and can get it all done cheap :D )
I was amazed :o at how well the car runs now, although i have to do something about a inconsistent miss ( me thinks that i have a shot lead!)
I would recomend that you have your radiator pressure tested and then proceed from there. A new radiator isn't always a bad thing just a expensive one :x .
stay kewl
