Replace the Water temp sender for the ECU ( not the guage)

if this is faulty the computer dosen't know the car has warmed up and will continue to fuel the engine as if it was cold. i.e. like a choke

I've got very similar symptoms. Mech. adance does seem to work, but looks kind of 'sticky' when checked with a timing light. I've never heard my car ping ever, even with lots of static advance.

Just to clarify, which vaccum port do I hook the dizzy vac advance to on the throttle body? If I stand on the passenger side of the engine bay looking at the ports, there are three ports. My dizzy is connected to the middle one. The right one seems to have much more vacuum than the other two, but when I use this one for the dizzy, the advance is too much at idle making it idle badly.

TD05, how do you check ECU error codes? I have a JA - so does it apply to my ECU?

the middle port it plumped to just above the throttle plate, so when the plate is closed, it shows that there is no vacum there. this means that under light cruise, when there is the most vacum, the dizzy will run the most advance, exactly what you want. so its in the right position. You can hook a vacum gauge up to this aswell and then try to drive with the most vacum all the time, best fuel ecomony this way :)

Fuel

Post by Rassy »

ha guys thanks for all the input on this matter, I still don't know what the hells going on with her but aventualy I'll get it right. ive just locked the timming on about 17-20 degs BTDC that seems to be the only place its likes to run. i havn't checked how much fuel its using yet but it dosn't look like its using a great deal.

I have a spare temp sensor an TPS and a air flow meter laying around might have a play when I get a chance, I havnt had much time to put into it lately due to work an me 21st that I drove 9 hours for but anyway jsut wanted to say thanks everyone

Cheers Rassy..........

P.S. I mostly run mobile preimum unleded, an never rugular unleded

with a multimeter, just above the ignitor there's a connector that seems to go nowhere, remove the dummy plug and insert the probes in there, the voltage goes up as many times as the error code then it stops, displays the next code if one's there...

"TDO5" I keep a close eye on the cam timing cause it did slip a tooth on me once an pinged its guts out an stuffed the block (which is the one I'm still using). With saying that the cam does always look half a tooth out is that normal?
What I did when I say I locked the timming, all I did was put a realy strong spring on the mech advance, an disconcet the vacume hose. I have been trying to get hold some new springs for it but only had time to go to repco an they didn't even know what I was talking about and had nothing listed for her. So I've got ta go see an auto elect an see if they can help, Just cant find time when work 11 hour days all week.

Also is 155psi alright for the comprsion or is it a bit low? I never check it when the motor was freash.

in doing that all you're gonna get is what you initially dial in, and no more, the std dissy should mechanically advance to about 35degs @4500rpm,, so you'll have less power up top if you lock ur timing..

TD05, yeah I know but the origanl springs are broken, thats why i need to get new ones. so until I can get a hold of some thats should be right, locking so its dosn't advance with ones that ive played with. When the cam timeing slipt a tooth an old mate fucked around with it to try an stop it from pingen an stuffed the origanl springs. Scince then I never let anyone touch it but me that way when I wreck somthing I can smack myself across the back of the head an feal better for it. lol

With the cam timing, make sure you use a screw driver against the front cover pointing at the cam timing mark held roughly square to the front cover to help line up with the dot on the cam wheel. It can look almost a tooth out when viewing over the radiator support due to parallax error. With the screwdriver as a guide, it all lines up well.

With my car, I checked for error codes and found it all clear. I did however find that doing the knock sensor check according to the manual made no change to my timing, but perhaps the procedure was not meant for a JA? Anyway, I may have a stuffed knock sensor which explains why my timing seems to be a bit retarded.

Thanks for the tip "Will", I'll have to check that out an put my mind to rest.
Ok I'm going to be another dumb idot an say what is the nock sensor? an were is it. Ive heard it being talk alot on here but never had the guts to ask an make a fool out of myself.
I'm only asking cause me car seems to be retading its self when I wouldn't of thought it need to. Cause it will start breaking down an wont pull at 5-6 grand. Can't have that. Plus it use to pull had to 6-7 grand before I tryed to get the mech timeing right an now its back they way its was an falls on its ass at 5 grand.

Rassy, the knock sensor is used to detect knock (aka pinging, detonation, pre-ignition). This can usually be stopped by retarding timing or increasing fuel to a certain extent if the engine is healthy. The Starion computer retards timing when knock is detected. The sensor screws into the side of the engine block under the intake manifold. Its got a green plug.

As a kind of fail-safe when the knock sensor fails, the timing computer retards timing to better ensure that no knock can occur.

I'm getting crap fuel economy too. Around 320km per tank, but a lot of it has been peak hour crawl. I think I'm going to go to aftermarket ECU to solve my problem.

hay will cheers for all thats, Ive got here running alot better now, pullen heaps harder an crusien properly to, I finaly found time to go see a guy at Dyno Tune here in canberra, not the most helpfull bunch but yar get that when yar not leaving yar car there for them to play with.
I did manage to get a little spring off him an put that in me dissy an pist off me realy heavy one's an hooked up a vacie line, which I worked out by searching through all me downloads of starion gear that I forgot I had, an found a digram of where all the vacume hose are ment to run to & from. The only problem Im haven now is its raining here an I cant tell if it pullen like it should cause 1st & 2nd just spins due to two raped tyres on the back. Buger I realy hate that dont you.lol

well beter get back into it.

Cheers Rassy............

P.S. Thanks again "Will" for explation of the knock senser. I think thats working fine? I hope
