Here's a quick synopsis.
1. Prepare car by sanding.
2. Buy Rust paint and roller
3. Paint, sand, repeat
4. Finished.

Sorry guys, found an update from today from this guy saying that the Tremco version didn't hold up to frost and needs to be re-done. However, further research into these monster threads has provided an answer.
Another product called "Brightside" is even easier to apply, doesn't require mixing and is actually a marine paint! Here's the thread, about 3/4 the way down, poster called Marq

Might have a crack with this "brightside" stuff on one of the spare front quaters I have lying around.
Would be good to have a crack at doing it when the car is finally running again.

damnit i've got a GC galant lying around just begging for paint! It needs a little bit of prep work left but this is the perfect solution to the cheap paint job i was after

I bought a litre of 'Steel Grey' Brightside the other day and tried it on a spare nose panel I have. I used the first two coats to get the hang of it, wet sanding after each. After the third coat, the finish (after overnight drying) was insanely glossy, straight off the roller - pretty damned impressed, I have to say!

your all crazy painting a starion with a roller what the fuckkkkk that is the biggest waste of time i am a spray painter so trust me if your in lonsdale 1000 buk resprays should hold up for 6 months spend 3 and you will get glassy look

Well, if you spent 5 minutes actually reading the material provided, or done 5% of the research into this before you shot your mouth off you wouldn't look like such a jerk!
This technique "Sounds" crazy, however it is proving so easy and so effective that there are already numerous magazine articles in th U.S claiming that this technique will put spray joints out of business! Think about it logically, it was only a matter of time before technology caught up with spraybooths! The paint in question is the first of it's kind in the world. It will not run, drip, crack, fade, peel and it will resist chemicals, scratches, stonechips and got knows what else. It dries to a gloss\glass finish straight out of the can and requires no special skills in order to apply it!
$1000 for a 6 month spray job? How does $200 sound for a 10 year job that you can do in a carport in 3 days?

FS: Ford 302ci Windsor. Race prepped block, Clevite bearings, ARP fixings, Hypertectic pistons, nitrided rods, knife edged crank, Gilmer drive, chrome moly rings, Yella Terra stage 3 heads, manly valves, Comp cams 294* solid roller, YT roller rockers, Funnelweb manifold, 2 inch spacer, Proform 830cfm carb, K&N 10" stack, ICE ignition. - 0437900210
Ok - finally found the digital camera! Here are some pics of nose header panel painted with a roller using Brightside. I used the 'roll and tip' method using 'Steel Grey' Brightside with a 100mm roller to apply the paint and tipped with another 100mm roller. I picked Steel Grey as the colour because it's closest to the existing colour (silver).
A few things to note:
1. As this was an experiment, I made no attempt to rectify existing scratches, dents, etc in the panel.
2. Preparation was only sanding with 360 grit followed by wax & grease remover.
3. After the first coat, I wet-sanded with 400 grit and then 600.
4. After the second coat, I wet-sanded with 800 grit and then 1200
5. After the third and final coat (so far), I did nothing except let it dry, so the pics are as it is straight off the roller, straight out of the can, no sanding, no compounding, no buffing, no polishing. I didn't even give it a wipe before taking the photos.
6. The rainbow and banding effects are artifacts of the camera and image size changing. Apologies for the lighting - I was trying different methods to capture the finish.
