Hey guys, this probably doesn't affect most people (or even anyone here) but i was wondering if any of you knew about the new rules on p platers and turbos

basically after june p platers cannot drive turbos. But i'm not sure whether thats if you get your license after that date you can't drive them so i'm wondering if i'm safe cos i turn 18 in march. Anyone got any ideas?

I am not sure about VIC Rules.

NSW Rules are along the lines of IF you had your p plates before 2006 (can't recall the exact date - it was the date the legislation actually was brought in), then you are exempt from the restrictions provided you do not commit any "severe" offences after the date.

If you are on your L plates (not sure if you have these in VIC, but basically this is the "have to drive with a fully licensed driver" time) and you change to your P plates after the cutoff date, then you are hit with the restrictions and not allowed to drive a starion anymore.

I was under the impression VIC already had a power/weight restriction in place?

It does, but the 155kw standard issue Subaru WRX just fits in, it's like 125kw/tonne or something..

in vic it's 125kw/tonne at the fly wheel. I wouldn't worry to much they don't know what a starion is anyway - laying around I still have a fine that says "toyota celica" so I wouldn't stress. When I got done for driving my dad's XR6T it was only $105 and no demerit points anyways.
My JA has perfect motor - FMIC - forgies - high flow head but...rusted front guards and keyed on every panel. Time to get serious or time to take it to the tip.

a standard WRX puts out more like 185kw (206kw for a STI)

yeah basically i'll have my p's a couple of months before they bring in the new rules so hopefully i'll be safe. i guess i should probably ring their office. if not i guess i won't be able to get a staz :cry:

I guess they've improved a bit since I last looked.. They were ~155kw when they first came out (95-96)...

it better affect only ppl who get thier license nxt yr cause i can tell u they won't be stopping me driving my car.

I mean honestly, who the fuck do they think they are?!! I thought we lived in a democratic monarchy, every law they shitheads in charge pass we get closer to tyranny.

As far as im concerned i reckon the old (yes i know its a stereotype) and the slow bastards on the road cause more accidents...Don't even get me started on pushbikers...

I think its safe to say that that is a law the majority of the population would support, so how is that not democratic? Would you feel the same way if it was targeting a different group of people that didn't include you? Clearly you wouldn't (as your reference to bikes and old people shows...) so your only angry because they're legislating against you, not because it isn't democratic or fair.

The bosses kid has an older WRX and it fits inside the CURRENT rules (the boss had it weighed and certified so the kid could drive it)

BUT he mentioned, and I am yet to see it in writing, that the rules will be back dated, so if you are already on P's when they come in, you're screwed as well! No turbo anything, V8 etc....

Sux to be young LOL

The bigger problem is that if you crash, your insurance will probably be voided. An even bigger problem would be that if you crashed and killed someone, you may end up in prison.

first of all you are right. I cannot claim to be unbiased in this issue.

Though would you agree, of all the demographics on the road young drivers are targeted the most? Is it fair that i have spent over $10 000 on my car only to be told 'no, you can't drive it'?

I believe more road accidents are caused by those that insist on doing less than the speed limit. ie. it makes most drivers (young or old) irritable by having to put up with it and can in turn make ppl take unneccessary risks. This can be found in push bike riders the issist on riding not on the side of the road but closer to middle, and yes in the elderly. Where are their restrictions? There are none

Yonug drivers do have the highest road toll yes, but in all cases it is the nut behind the wheel not young drivers as a whole. In regard to new govt laws no one under 25 (in Qld) will be able to drive a turbo or v8 vehicle. How will this help when a dutsun 180 B can exceed the speed limit easily and an inexperienced driver can be a potential fatality.

I agree wholeheartedly to some of the new laws (longer learner periods etc) but i feel that this law is yet another attempt to piss off what i feel is the most targeted group of people on the road today.

Realistically I think its mainly aimed at the real dills who do like 190 in a 60 zone, hit a speed hump and turn their car to steel wool, path of destruction and loss of life aside.
Yea a 180B will exceed the speed limit, but it won't get to the stupendous speeds that a wound-up wrx or a hot V8 will. The other thing is that it's hard for the cops to tell if a turbo car has been wound up or not.
A factory WRX is OK, but if the turbo's been swapped and the exhaust opened a little and the computer remapped then it might have another 50kw and be well over the limit.
I had a celica with an 18R 2li for my first car. Not a powerhouse by any means, didn't stop me having fun and I certainly ended up with an unfair share of dints but the point is less power means less energy when something does go wrong.
Laws are their so that the 50% of people who are below average intelligence stay alive to keep the other half of the population in the upper 50%..

Hang on a second while I get up on my soap box :D

1) Driving a car on a public road is a privilege not a right.
2) Speed limits are maximums not minimums; as long as I'm doing it safely I can drive at any speed up to that limit, regardless of what any other driver thinks.
3) Take responsibility for your own actions; if you fuck up taking "unnecessary risks" don't blame somebody else. No-one's holding a gun to your head.
4) Public roads are just that, public. They are not (with a few exceptions) the sole domain of the motor vehicle and we must all respect the rights of other road users.
5) These new laws are not a means to punish young drivers, they are a means to limiting the severity of the risks young drivers are more inclined to take.

I was young and fooled around on the roads, and thankfully I am now older and maybe a little wiser. I am still young at heart and love to drive my cars and ride my push bike with enthusiasum, but within the law (most of the time) and in the right environment.

As the statistics prove, regardless of age; the roads are no place for taking "unecessary risks" - if you feel inclined to take a risk, got to a track, a paddock, a whore, whatever.

My 16 year old son will be venturing out onto the roads soon enough, and the only thing I cannot give him is 20+ years of experience and near misses.

I'm all for the new laws and would be totally behind new laws which make it harder to get and keep a licence, even for us oldies.

Actually the current crop of australia delivered wrx put out somethink like 169kw. And prior to the current model all the australian sti's put out less than 206kw as they were detuned for australia, with the exception of the first sti's subaru australia brought in which were the two door sti's.
