I don't really think that's why. I think we are the only place that got 3.9 (?). Only difference is the number of teeth on the wheels, the diameter, width etc are probably identical (39/11 vs 39/10??). Probably has more to do with beefing up the crownwheel and pinion in later models.Cookiemonster wrote:The need for the larger housing is due to the 3.9:1 diff ratio.. which does not fit in the smaller housing.
I reckon half way through producing JB's, Mitsubishi knew they would be bringing out a 3:9 diff option and thus decided to just produce the larger diff housing from then on.
From what I know, all US models have LSD's so they made them stronger etc to suit 2.6's and motorsport teams probably squealed and said make them stronger. May as well put them in all models no matter where they went to keep volume up and costs down. They probably just had some old diffs lying around when they made the first Starions.
That's what I reckon anyway.

My limited understanding is that you could get 3.5:1 & 3.9:1 in both housing (both LSD & non-LSD). Ie the early starions had both ratios and LSD or non depending on export location.
An extra spanner in the works is the ratios available in the US from autos. These were 4.3:1 (or thereabouts) and no idea what housing these fit in (was on Ebay many moons ago)

There is no such thing as a 'cheap LSD' for a Starion! And a cheap 3.9 LSD is even more rare!Camotec wrote:Does anyone wanna sell me a 3.9" LSD??? for cheap bucks??? either that or the race tyres are going to be smaller to compensate :) I am thinking Advan
If anyone really wants to have a vomit go to a Silvia website and see how much an LSD for one of those costs. You can pick up an entire LSD, with half shafts, for $300
I have an LSD out of a widebody (Modified with 4 bolt half shafts) and I use the Yokohama Advans to reduce the gearing - that's what we were using when at the Porsche club supersprints at Wakefield Park.

So where does one get an LSD centre?
Hi Folks,
This might not be the most appropriate place to ask the above question, yet having been thru every single ad today in the buy/sell section of this forum in pursuit of an LSD centre, I don't know where to head for one of these. :?
Anyone out there able to help. In Melb with two JAs.
Thanx.
