am I correct to assume that LSD centres from any starion (US. NZ, Eurpoe) will all bolt in?

No.

From what I can tell if you have a JA diff, the only centre that will fit will be another JA one. Larger one will not fit.
If you have a JB/JD diff, the housing is larger and the torque tube is shorter, similar if not the same as US LSD ones. But not having changed centres out, I cannot say for certain it would fit, but I reckon it would go damn close.
88/89 model diffs are larger again, you won't fit the centres from one of these in anything but an 88/890 housing.

Help at all?

Al,
Actually the JB & JD diffs are different. The JB LSD is actually the same as JA(or so I'm led to believe). The larger+stronger housing is in the JDs along with the 3.9:1 gears.

This is how I know it.
JA has a unique (small) diff housing (3.55) open and LSD but lsd's are rare. It has shorter housing and longer torque tube that other models.
JB Large housing (3.55) open and LSD
JD Large housing (3.9) open and LSD

US Widebody 83-86 large housing (3.55) LSD
US Widebody 88-89 largest housing and bigger splines (3.55) LSD

US 83-86 entire diff assembly will bolt in to all Aus models and use the same half shafts.
Dunno about 88-89 housing but I am pretty sure it will fit but you need US half shafts. Can confirm if required.

does anyone know if there are any aftermarket centres that are compatible withe staz?
Someone once told me the centre is similar to the 4 bolt galant ones and that cusco centres for these would be compatible but looking at my spare vr4 diff and the staz diff i can tell you at least dimension wise that claim may be a bit off
still i havent cracked open the centre of either the staz or the vr4 diff so how the hell would i know! :D

Al, the JB 3.55 diff (open and LSD) is in the smaller housing.

Ok, I over generalised, JB's had both small and large from what I know. I don't know when they changed from one to the other. One would assume the earlier the JB, the more chance you have a small housing.

How to tell the diff next time you're under the car.

Also, the 88-89 US models have 6 bolt hubs for the half shafts and therefore would require the matching (5-stud) hubs to fit. They also have more splines and are thicker.

The Starion was built for race and from a design perspective the smaller JA housing would have probably been made for open diffs and the LSD having the clutch plates in it would have required a bigger housing. Mitsu prolly just standardised the housing after a few years to fit both LSD and Open range diffs into the common housing thus eliminating the need to swap the torque tube as well as the diff, would have made the swap quicker for race teams if they were hard for parts.

Anyways thats my theory :D

Ben, your theory doesn't account for the fact that the first JB LSD's came in the smaller housing.

The need for the larger housing is due to the 3.9:1 diff ratio.. which does not fit in the smaller housing.

I reckon half way through producing JB's, Mitsubishi knew they would be bringing out a 3:9 diff option and thus decided to just produce the larger diff housing from then on.
