Broken gearbox or clutch??

Sounds like a gearbox problem

Because when you step on the clutch when parked nothing in the box is spinning, but the clutch still is spinning.

release the clutch and the gearbox maindrive axle will spin with the engine & clutch (even when not in gear)

maybe one of the bearings in the gearboxhas had it or a cog has some damage.

It'd pay to drop the bottom off the gearbox to have a look just in case.. I had a gearbox that made a ticking sound I wasn't sure about, didn't worry to much about it either. When I got multipoint on the car I took it for a blast in the wet and when I shifted into second it made a nasty grinding sound and the car stopped accelerating. I'd knocked a second and third tooth off the second gear Cog. Looked like one tooth had been missing for a while (hence the tick-tick noise) because of the wear on the tooth next to it and the state of the area where it used to be. I guess the missing tooth meant that the ones next to it were working much harder and they came off too when I floored it..

It won't take long to drop the bottom cover off and check for any damage..

another source of ticking which you will only get on the accelerator is if you have lost a nut on the exhaust manifold, I am experiencing this frequently, ive lost 2 in the last 2 months, im going for extra spring washers.

there is a starion gearbox on trademe for $150 buy now.

i say get it and just chuck that in, and fix your old one to have a spare

Drop the gearbox out and check how tight your bolts are on the flywheel!

I had the same crazy clues as you, noise from the box, even vibrations, and when you push the clutch in it goes away.
I thought I had broken a spring or finger in the clutch.

Don't drive it anymore!!! Take the gearbox out and check.
My flywheel was ready to come off!
It would tear through the bell housing and take your legs off!

what you have described is a old worn out thrust bearing, spend 150 on a clutch kit which includes one cause you might as well change the clutch while yr at it (ie fair amount of work)

my vl has a worn thrust bearing which makes a noise when im not on the clutch pedal.. hasnt given me any problems

I had that noise once in another car and it turned out to be the input bearing...

but since it happened after dropping the clutch, it could be a broken spring on the disc ...
