kit crashed into something today :o

outside my workshop! :wtf:

how did this happen u ask?? well the handbrake was pulled on a normal amount, not on slightly but not ripped up as high as i could humanly pull it... car out front of the shop (to avoid other customers opening doors on it etc) which puts it on a slight angle as my driveway slopes down to the workshop. i NEVER park cars in gear (first thing u learn at tech) so it was relying on the h/brake. never had a problem before... i`m in my office, half an hour after i parked it, i hear this loud POP!

and see kit rolling forward....... :glare:

yell out expletive which rhymes with "truck" and sounds like "flock" while bolting outside to throw my body between pristine black metal and workshop wall........

arrive 2 late and hear a "crunch" noise... :crying

pop my head out the door to see..........

a crushed wheely bin with a kit shaped side.. drove kit back up the hill and chocked the wheels, jumped out expecting the worst, to find NO DAMAGE! can u believe it?? i cant, no one else that was there can either!

LUCKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!! :drunks

rang gary to tell him what happened, he said "yeah it does that sometimes, u gotta reef it up as hard as u can"

why wasnt i told this earlier?? kit will now come equipped with

WHEELCHOCKS!!!!!!!!!

the wheelybin is totally trucked tho..

Why not leave it in gear? Once bitten twice shy I reckon.

Once upon a time I parked at a nice gravel carpark after a bit of a squirt. Left car idling and handbrake on. Come back to the car half an hour later and it's resting against the treated pine log fence and one of the upright logs is at 45degrees. It was barely in the ground. If it had given, car would have rolled down a lovely incline and wouldn't have stopped for a few hundred metres until the trees started.

I don't do that anymore.

I always leave the car in gear and the handbrake on.

Why is this a no no?

Ouch!! Good to hear everything is still straight!

I also leave my car in gear if I'm on a hill (gear depends on direction), if its level then I take it out of gear.

I always leave mine in gear too, after coming back from the supermarket once to find my car trying to make out with the ass of another car in another parking zone... :x

reason for not leaving in gear:

people tend to hit the key without looking whether its in gear or not when cars are parked in or around workshops! i did it once (left a car in gear) when i was an apprentice and got ROASTED for it... as if a car was started in gear then someone could get trapped and crushed... same sort of rule/habit as using jackstands religiously!

my old boss at repco put his own sons car off the hoist (4 poster) and into a bench/wall coz he left it in gear then did a service and forgot he left it in gear, hit the key to run it before checking the oil level and the car shot forward doing about 4 grands worth of damage.. LUCKY someone wasn`t in front of it! a human life is irreplaceable, metal can be fixed..

ps i`ll never leave a car in gear no matter what, even if gary`s car did get damaged instead of the lucky escape it had! but i will be using wheelchocks for every car parked there ever again tho..
