noise on evo 5 gearbox- any ideas?

Post by STARZILA »

Ive just bought an evo5 [still keeping the starion of course] and there seems to be a gearbox noise. It has a standard exhaust system so the car is relly quiet and i can hear a constant whurring/wineing in all gears. Its not super loud but there's definately something there. When its idling it makes a light chattering noise.
Any information would be awesome as it owes me heaps and i'd be pretty upset if I have to take the box out. ????????

If its a whining noise it could be that it was run out of oil and the bearings are fucked.. If thats the case its g/box out :(

Without stating the obvious, (oil)! You may have some low angle gears in there.... Where did the car come from?

as above with the whirring... be cool if you had a toughened box :beer

the chattering could be a throw out bearing :?

Is the transfer box a chain drive? Like a Pajero or Triton box?

First thing would be to go through the driveline (gearbox, transfer case and rear diff) and make sure they're filled with the right amount of genuine mitsubishi oils. For some reason the evo's don't like aftermarket fluids in the driveline (with the exception of BG Synchroshift in the gearbox).

Is it a whining rumbling sound on decel in neutral ? does it feel funny engaging? could be a few things, transfer case input shaft, you could have a solid centre clutch in there the number 1 cause of noise in 4wd mitsu, your rear diff may be wound up if it's been towed with the rear wheels rolling. Check and top up fluids first.

Chris at meek performance has got to the bottom of the noise in vr4-evo3's this could be the same problem starting to rear it's head on newer models. The main problem is vibration caused by incorectly made replacement cluctches and general wearing of shafts and splines. You just may have lucked out on an import and scored a monster twin plate.

Some good advise there.....Thanks for your input people! :beer
I think first of all i'll drain the box and check the oil. Make sure it doesnt look metalic. It does have a noisy LF wheel bearing so I'll do that too then I can focus more on the noise. Its only done 78,000Kays and is stock standard. It was also owned by a lady from 16,000 so i dont think its been thrashed.
