w58 is the non-turbo gearbox used in many toyotas. Seen them behind 6cylinders making 450+ ft-lbs tq to the ground. The later are the better boxes found behind the 2jzge.

The other 5speed used for turbo applications of the 7m and 1j.
Lots of ongoing debates on which is the better box, despite the R154 being alot beefier than the W58.... which some folks say shifts better and is equally as strong.
Gearbox life depends on how you treat it

Heefner has a w58 behind his g54. Lookup his threads in SQC 'engine mods' or 'advanced' forum

The turbo version that is used here is out of MA70 1988-90 Supras and not the Getrag 6 speed from the JZA80 model.

I am running a W58 using a "Dellow" bellhousing. Its bolts to the 4G63 straight io.

There are a couple of places here that do the bellhousing. Dellow in Sydney were the first I think but are not really interested now. Might run one up as a special but it was not a high volume seller. There is another place in Melbourne but I cant remember the name.
I have a G54B though. I found the place that has what I need.
Our cars run the 4G63 SOHC engine which has the same gearbox as you guys with the G54B. Our cars have the "wide block" 4G63 not the "narrow" block like the 4G63 DOHC (Galant VR4, Eclipse, etc).

Out here it's the 3rd (94' and up) gen Supra twin turbo that has the 6-speed Getrag tranny, sorry for the confusion.

mrb1, thank you for the info, I didn't know that.

r154 would be the 5 speed to upgrade to kronus. w58 is like an 88+ starion tranny that shifts a lot better, thats about it. r154 is quite a bit beefier, and can be supra 550rwhp daily driven :P It has some deal with some bad shims or something like that that tend to fail, but they do make replacement parts you can toss in. r154 will need some serious beating to the right side of the transmission tunnel on a 5 speed car. If you do get a w58, I hear the mk4 na 5 speed supras had the best ones made.
