Balance shaft timing

Post by Zero Hour »

Im changing the timing belts on my JA cause the belt that goes to the left balance shaft has broken.

Does anyone know how to get the timing between the two balance shafts sorted?

Special tool? If you want to remove these 3 items all u need is a socket and undo the bolt that is in the end of the crank. This is very simple. Im pretty sure you need to take if off coz ive never tried doing it without. However see if you can slip the belt over it all once u back off the 12mm head on the tensioner...go on, give it a go!

Yep you can slip the Belt over without having to remove anything :P

Though I would recommend you re-fit the Lower Timing cover back on afterwards

Just because timing marks are lined up doesn't mean timing is correct.
The trick is to spin the balance shaft and when you let it go it should try to line it self up. When marks are lined up spin it right, it should spin itself back to mark, same if u spin it left. There is also a bolt at back of block u can remove and line it up. (easier the first way)

True, this is for the shaft on the pump drive. Has anyone mentioned this before?

the belt CAN be installed without removing the sprocket cover, the cover on the sprocket is very thin and can be bent out to allow the belt to slip in, however it must be bent back so that it doesn't rub against the main timing belt or it'll make a ver scary noise when you start the engine...
