HELP with registration please!

I don't know if you up on this and it may not help you much but, prior to 1989 VIN's weren't mandatory as a means of identifying a vehicle in Victoria; here's a quote from VicRoads website:

"VINs were made mandatory in Australia on January 1,1989 by an amendment to Australian Design Rule 43/01, made under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act of 1989. All vehicles (except plant) built or sold in Australia since that date require a VIN to be stamped in a secure place or on a plate attached to the vehicle before they can be registered."

So, even though the VIN can be found on your car, VicRoads probably wont use it as the primary means of identification.

I am also going through the re-registration process at the moment and when I gave them my VIN they said they had no record of my car :?
Luckily I have details on past registration plate numbers, one plate came with the car and the Owners Manual had original registration details, so I have been able to get at the vehicle's history.
If you can get a hold of the Owners Manual; the inside of the front cover is normally filled out by the dealer when they sell the car and it may have details of the original registration plates???

Yeah, I was lucky enough to have a full history up to about 1995, book came with car and is completely filled out! Shame yours didn't, I don't even need mine! :? As stated before, try Mitsubishi, they must have the original owner details including the reg number!!!

yeah my car didnt come with a book. well it did, but not the one with my starion. Those two pictures of the plates, i have both of those. Both those plates, i have them printed out sitting on my desk, ready to be sent to customs to get 'authorisation' to register it. i just have to write the letter...
So should these two plates be enough? Cos they keep sayin no no no

Tried them on the way home from VicRoads :D but they didnt have it either. the guy there has gone to me "its got the compliance plate, what else do they want.."

With the Mitsubishi angle, did you just call into the store? Call Head office on 1300 13 12 11
They should (by law i think) have access to records of your car and original owner info...

Went into the dealership in Frankston. The guy checekd the VIn on his comp, but it didnt come up with anything. Ill try the main number tomorrow during the day.

So how would the police identify the car and its owner if it was abandoned and didn't have rego plates? Not being able to find out where the car was last registered from the VIN or compliance plates is BS. They are just being typically lazy. If the car has both the buld and comp plates then it is definitely an Aussie car.

However, from Vicroads perspective, there are many cases where imported cars have had VINs and comp plates swapped from local models, esp Mitsubishi Evo's. But we are talking about an old Mitsubishi here.

If VicRoads don't have any record of it, you might have to chase it up with the other state roads departments in case it comes from interstate.
