Travel Tips for a West Aucklander

Post by JJH »

OK all you fine, Kiwi, Austarion citizens. The family & I are skipping over the pond in the New Year and we're after some travel tips for your magnificent South Island.

We have a general idea of what we'd like to see, but nothing like asking the locals hey? :D
Like, where to go?, where not to go?, what beer to drink? etc, etc.

We've got a 6 birth camper and are going to be there for 10 days starting at Christchurch.

Also, what's the weather likely to be??? Shorts & t-shirt or jeans & jumper??

:beer

Shorts and T-shirt for sure i would say :). ChCh is a wonderful city, head up to the hills and drive summit road, awesome scenery, you can see the entire city on one side, and Lyttleton wharf on the other. It can be pretty windy up there tho, and watch out to "da boyzzz", as its a bit of a street racing hangout these days i hear....

Heading north from chch is a nice drive. Take the coast road and just follow it, you pass through lots of little town to stop and have a browse in. Maybe stop in for some whale watching action in kaikoura?

Nelson is bloody nice this time of year, trust me :). Awesome atmosphere up here, lots of cafe's and bars to chill out in. The life up here is really starting to pick up, the population swells by some 30% over summer i hear.

Weather is supposed to be good, at the moment it's both sun and rain in one day, typical nz weather.. so be prepared.

Yea half of the south island usually ends up in nelson on new years, hamner springs is nice also.

I recommend you head over to the Golden Bay/ Nelson/ Able Tasman National Park area, it's about as good as it gets in New Zealand.

There isn't much to say about Christchurch really, just that you should probably head somewhere else as soon as possible :)

Thanks for the info guys :beer

I'll keep my eyes open for Staz's while I'm there. So if a hulking 6 berth campervan pulls up alongside, it'll probably be us :D
