83 STARION THROTTLE BODY / ECI REBUILD KIT.

Post by logan hess »

Does any one know where I can find a rebuild kit for a 83 Starion throttle body / ECI unit? If not, does anyone know where I could find a complete throttle body?

Thanks in advance,
Still looking in the USA.

I partially rebuilt mine (replaced all the o-rings and seals), stopped the leaks up good.
I couldn't find an actual kit, i just pulled mine apart and took all the o-rings down to my local bearing/oil seal shop and match up new ones as close as i could get. Car ran a lot better afterwards

Chris,
I beginning to think I'll end up doing the same thing as far as matching the seals go. Did you use your old injector seals? Mine look like they are in good shape, but I'm not sure if they are the reason my car isnt running right... I had a flooding issue that prevented me from starting it. There was also eccessive leakage around the ECI unit. I was finally able to drive it home after I tightened the 4 injector houseing screws on top of the ECI unit. It's been parked ever since.

Thanks for the reply

sillbeer,
Thanks for the info.... Very informative indeed.
I have the O-rings on order from a local industrial supply shop. Hopefully I'll have the Starion back on the road before this weekend..

Put ECI all together last weekend, and the car's running as good as ever.
Also thought I would mention that I've had success using techron concentrate for clogged injectors. Before the seal leak started, I thought I was having a computer problem due to hesitation when accelerating, but all the while it turned out to be fouled injectors.... The Techron may have contributed to my seal leakage, but I'm sure the seals were close to having to be replaced anyway..

Another tip:
Where my injector wire insulation was cracked, I used "seal all" to coat the exposed wireing.

Good to hear logan. I think most people who tackle the ECI leak problems come out on top.

this is a bit late now but i don't really come on here too often unless i've got problems with the car. hopefully it will come in handy to someone else though.

fairly complete guide on how to rebuild ECI unit and what 'O' rings you'll need:

http://prozac.orcon.net.nz/eciguide/rebuild.html

i did not write this, just found it on Austarion ages ago and bookmarked it because its pretty handy. Full credit has to go to Prozac.

cheers

Well I got about a 3 week run, and again, I have gas leaking around the top of the injector cap to throttle body flange. This has been a real problem area for me, and I'm finding it more dificult to pinpoint the real cause. I must have taken this thing apart at least a dozen times now. My flange surface is in good shape. The seal sizes I ordered are the ones from this link..http://prozac.orcon.net.nz/eciguide/rebuild.htm (same one that was posted above)l...The seals seem like a good fit, but now I'm begining to think otherwise. Notice this artical refers to the 1985 intercooled starion, with the assumtion that the 83 is the same..? It certainly looks the same, but is it?? The guy at the industrial supply place seems to think what I have should work but he's not absolutly positive. Im tempted to order a thicker O-ring where the ECI cap attaches to the throttle body..
Any advice anyone??
Thanks in advance.

I would have thought an 85 intercooled set would be suited to the type B injection system, but those pictures seem to show the type A, I'd assume it's wrong.

I can only go off what I did with regard to the seals. When I pulled it all apart, I took all the seals into a place called Transeal which specialise in, you guessed it, seals. They measured the thickness and ID of each one and then went and found an appropriate match remembering to go a little thicker than the originals due to time and deterioration. It all seemed to work out fine. Not that the ID (internal diameter) of some need to be less than the old ones because they will of course have stretched and memory sets in so to speak.

Think I found your problem...

*NOTE* This ECI unit is from a 1985 Jap import, factory intercooled starion. I recently examined the ECI unit from my 83 Jap import non-intercooled starion, and noticed some differences in the main housing casting. I'm not sure of any internal differences yet, but i'll keep this updated.*NOTE*
