Here's my 2 bob's worth on this matter....
I used to own a JB Starion numbered #219, built 7/85 & sold 7/86!
I remember having a chat to a guy that was selling Starion parts where
I asked what was the Vin number of his JB? It was either 229 or 249 ??.
In any case, I was a little disgruntled that his was later than mine.
At the time I just bought a JD numbered #45 and rang Mitsu. and was
informed that only 49 JD's had been sold. So, we're actually looking at
sales figures of; JA's 1349, JB'S ~240 & JD'S ~50. Perhaps some cars
were designated for racing ?? That's getting closer to the breakup of the 1638 figure!!

It was some 8-10 years back.... as I was asking about the codes...
ie., E59 - 2L
D26 - 5 speed
D60 - LSD amongst other things for a silver JD #02 I was also looking at buying.
Some old bloke from the Service Dept. of Haberfield Mitsubishi who had a interest in these cars.
Tried again some time later and was given the run around....and now they
no longer exist!

The numbers I quoted were from Mitsubishi marketing . Obviously with fully imported cars (in the 80's at least) their records are perhaps not that accurate . It's not hard to understand , when you consider there were cars brought in pre-release , R&D cars (which were not always scrapped), cars brought in by/for Ralliart , interim models , so on & so forth . The JE is also an interesting example because it was slated as a new model until they pulled the pin coz of crap JD sales and parts listings do/did exist for them and of course several were brought in but there are no sales records that I've been able to find . I do find the number quoted above for JDs a little low coz there are so many (relatively) around but hopefully this just means that most of them have survived !
Also an important thing to remember is that VIN numbers aren't the be all and end all of numbers sold in any country . It is helpfull and accurate to help identify particular component changes and interim models but only a guide for sales . :)

Mitsubishi
I contacted Mitsubishi via e-mail nearly 2 weeks ago, what i posted was
Ill look in my owners Manual tomorrow to see when mine was purchased,, If it was June/87 then i may have one of the last.
Today i get an E-mail sayingI own a Mitsubishi Starion JD.I am a member of Austarion.com an
Australian Starion enthusiast website. There seems to be confusion on the
number of Starions that were sold in Australia in the three different
models.JA,JB and JD.There seem to be 1349 JA models,about 200 JB models
and an unknown number of JD Starions.I own JD number 50.Can you tell me
how many were made for Australia. These cars are getting rarer and rarer
and alot of people want to know how many of the JD model were made as
they have alot of extra features that the JA,JB models did not. If this
E-mail is sent to the wrong place could you please foward it to the
correct section.Any help is greatly appreciated.
]We acknowledge receipt of your email and apologise for the delay in our
response.
Unfortunately we are unable to provide the amount of vehicles that were
manufactured for each model, we can only provide you with a total figure
of 1478 vehicles sold between March 1982 and June 1987.
Thank you for your enquiry.
