They're Australian registration codes.

JA is the original Starion. JB's have the facelift front bumper, better fuel injection, intercooler etc, JD's are the latest model, rear spoiler, new steering wheel, electric windows on doors etc.

JB was ~1985, JD's started in 1986.

I'm in NZ, so my cars don't have the JA or JB vehicle codes either. In fact I dont even have a VIN plate on any of them.

Close, Australian's actually have the 'TURBO' which is an export specification. Another export specification is the EX which was the general export version. In countries like the UK the EX is a higher spec than the TURBO.

GX,GSR-I, GSR-II, GSR-III, GSR-V, GSR-X, GSR-VR,TSi,ESiR, EX, TURBO are all spec levels. The decals showing the spec level will always be behind the front doors (not on them). In saying that, the ESiR is a later revision of the EX, and GSR-VR is a later revision of the GSR-V. However they're still a spec level :)

JA/JB/JD are just VIN codes used in Australia.

On another note, NZ got the EX, where Australia seemed to get the 'TURBO'. I imagine that is why most post-84 NZ new Starions you see have full leather, and limited slip diffs and ABS and some even have traction control. The trouble is that they are an endangered species, and the parts sell before you have time to blink. 95% of the ones here are Japanese :( which makes me a sad panda :(

You can see quite clearly, that I spend too much time reading about these things :(

Whoops. Sorry. The Japanese Starion's had intercoolers from 1985 etc. I have/had a Japanese version of the 1985 JB, some weird differences. It was intercooled, TC05 turbo without watercooling, viscous fan, JA type injection but using JB sized injectors etc etc

Anyway thats why I thought the JB had a cooler.

ahhh makes sense now,
Over here we first got narrow body non intercooled, then narrow body with a horizontal IC, then same again but with a vertical IC then 2.0L widebody + IC and finally wide 2.6.

I think all the widebody ones were EX spec with LSD's and leather etc...
