I see no reason why it shouldnt work (for low power gains),

electric motors are capable of some crazy things, take brushless motors for example, they will pull off around 8000 rotations/ volt = 8000 x 12
= 96,000 rpm if set up propperly theres no reason it couldn't push a decent amount of air, more than could be drawn in by the natural suction of a NA engine.
In some cases theses devices (electric blowers) make use of 2 motors to increase torque and could then potentially be geared such that it can build up pressure only a couple psi.

But the amount of power required to run your motors outstrips any potential gain so why bother.

the motor specs I have quoted run on 2300mah bank of batteries (AA or li-pol) hardly a power draining device.

For a 2l engine, 90% volumetric efficiency at 4000RPM:

Volume flow rate:

flow per cycle (2 revs) = 2 * 0.9 = 1.8li.

volume flow (li/sec) = 1.8 * 4000 / 2 / 60 = 60 li/second

volume flow (m^3 / s) = 60/1000 = 0.06 m^3/s

fluid power = volume flow rate * pressure

pressure = 50,000 Pa (~7PSI)

power = 0.06 * 50000 = 3000 watts or 3Kw

most compressors are 50-60 % efficient but that includes the heat that does not help us at all, and we'll throw that away through the intercooler, so real efficiency in terms of usefull boost is more like 30-40%. I'll be generous and assume 40..

*So*, the amount of power needed to make 7 pounds boost at 4 grand is:
3/0.4 = 7.5 killowatts.

to get this from a car electrical system at 12 volts (power = volts * amps) means

7500/12 = 625 Amps.


You would need 10 standard starion alternators, running at full power, to generate this current. you would need a substantial sized motor running huge cables to carry the required current, and the RPM for most centrifugal compressors is in excess of 80,000RPM, so gearing would be necessary. Guess what, more efficiency losses.


Enough numbers, suffice to say that without some clever electrical design, appropriate technology and with relatively low efficiency (maybe 60-70% compared with a normal belt drive SC or turbocharger) the idea falls flat on it's face. Not something to wire up with 20 gauge wire to the roof light circuit to give '20 Hp gains'..

Maybe in a few years time when 40 volt electrical systems are common, the 200 amps required will be within reach. Maybe then, pulling hundreds of killowatts from the batteries will be a much better way of releasing the smoke from your tyres.

Probably not on a starion any time soon.

It may be able to flow air, but not enough to feed an engine, let alone generate boost. Put your hand on the outlet, I bet the fan speed lowers.

The gearing may provide high output torque figures, but it doesn't give the motor itself any more actual power. Think about what happens with a vacuum cleaner when you stick it to something, the motor slows down.

This is just another As Seen on TV bullocks product, and if I saw it on a car I would sincerely laugh at the owner. Even their guarantees are written in such a way that they look good, but actually say 'up to' not 'atleast'.

It may reduce the vac pressure a little on smaller engines, less work for the motor, but the difference in power wouldn't exactly be worth the money.

Its on-par with chrome hubcaps, and the 'make your car sound turbocharged!!!!!11one' thing people put in their mufflers. The biggest performance gain most people notice will be from the pod filter on the end of that thing.

But don't let the physics get in the way.

Go grab an electric supercharger. Cable tie on a fuel magnet. And bung on one of those turbo exhausts.
Now jump onto eBay and buy a Performance Intake Sensor Speed Mod / Chip (aka a resistor) for $12 bucks.
Don't forget a good grounding system. Thats $89 bucks well spent.
Then for good measure tape on a brocky polariser and you may as well hang a set of rosemary beads around the rearview mirror.

I like Rosmary better.
Anyone know of Thomas Knight? I was going to put one of these babys on my BMW, but didnt want all the extra electrical stuff that goes with it molesting my car. They have a few products but the one i was looking at was an eaton with 3 starter motors and an overdrive unit.

Its a freaky thing with the starter motors all hooked up to it. It's only good for a squirt every now and then before it has to recharge.
