Try other mitsubishi models, Cordia's Sigmas etc.

A manufacturer will always take the cheap way out and share parts, although I have no evidence to back up my theory. Worth a try though.
It wasnt me, nobody saw me do it, you cant proove a thing

pull out the center console and check that the handbrake is pulling the two cables properly when u lift up the handbrake. If its not, something is wrong in the attachment mechanism there and you need to fiddle with it.

If they are being pulled, chances are the handbrake cables have seized. Someone was talking about this earlier last week, but unbolt the cables, hang them up, WD40 down into them liberally. Pull them and then they will start to get a bit easier to move, repeat until they are good. Reinstall.

In between pulls, wipe the cable ends with a rag. The movement of the cable will loosen the dirt and it'll work its way out. You need to get rid of the dirt to stop it from happening again too quickly.
