no the offset is the distance between the center of the wheel and where the wheel mounts on the hub. The back spacing is what charlie described, it measures how far in the wheel will go

Prozac, that sounds about right.

The vr4 wheels will have an offset of about 35-38mm, eg fwd offset. If you put them on a starion without hub extensions (not spacers) then the car will look worse than a Ford Taurus.

Hub extensions do not increase the load on wheel bearings because the track of the car is not being increased. But only if if you then fit a wheel with more positive offset.

The problem with spacers is that they cause the load to be taken by the wheels studs, this is not what they are for. Typically the load is taken on the centre bore of the wheel.

really? i thought the offset was the spacing between the back of surface of the hub to the edge of the inner rim?? what this is backspace?

Thought some pics and some specific examples might help someone making a selection, and to help turn this post into a good reference for wheels.

HR30 Skyline Ti wheels, 15", 4x114.3, +35mm offset. Not sure of the wheel width, so PM me if you know and I'll edit this post so we can keep the reference info nice and tight in the one post. 205/50R15 tyres in the pic on an AE86 Toyota Sprinter. The Sprinter's nominal offset is +28mm (I think) on narrower 5.5" x 13" wheels.

Yes, the offset is +18 for the 5 studs too.

Stock tyre size according to the sticker on the inside of my door.

I'm wanting a 7" wide mag or larger for my rears, then getting the rear guard flared a little so the tyre doesn't stick out.

If you want to know what size wheels and offsets will fit, let me know what size you want as I have a list of different sizes and offsets that should fit quite well.

I currently have 245/45/16 with a large + offset on the rear and have plenty of room for more width. The fronts dont have so much room to play with but 225's will fit easy enough.

Fronts are ok as they are, but at some stage I wanted 245 or 265. Preferably on a 16" or 17" rim.

Spiders web - If you are fitting a 7 inch rim you wouldnt need to have any flaring done to the guards.

That is assuming you use the correct offset - a negative offset would pace the wheel beyond the guards, but where would you find one with 4 x 114.3 - you wouldnt.

I have seen the 5 stud widebody wheels, 16x8 fitted on a narrow body. So there is plenty of room to be had, just a matter of using the appropriate offset.
