Has anyone used JVC before? There magnets are MASSIVE for the speakers they are.

And to judge an amp, would the best method to be look at the fuse?

For amps the two big ones are RMS and THD.

The lower the THD the better. Most decent amps are around 0.05%.

Brand name comes a lot in to this as well, many consumer brands are guilty of giving out exageratted figures. Consumer brands tend to rate the RMS as the best they got, other brands (like Rockford Fosgate) state the WRMS as the minimum you can expect from the amp. THD is altered too by testing it in different conditions, there is a fair amount of "As Seen on TV' tactics when it comes to amps, more so in the retail-consumer products.

There are other things that do not translate on to paper, and once again, its often best to hear the amp running similar gear to yours before purchase if possible.

Thats my 2c. Personally I just find an amp capable of matching or overpowering my speakers (WRMS) with a THD of ~0.05, but I dont strive for perfection nor am I planning on etnering any SQL competitions :)

I understand the RMS rating hence why i talk of speakers in that manor. But what does THD stand for?

Is that some kind of distortion level rating? and how do I pick out those "as seen on tv" ratings? :)

I thought looking at the fuse would be a good way also as i notice alot of higher end amps with better ratings use fuses about 20A +... More power to move the coils

WRMS is the average power output level continous without clipping the amp is capable of without crapping its dacks. Watts = Volts * Amps, so the fuse is just rated at a set ampere rating that normally allows higher current than the max WRMS of the amp itself requires, so its a much much less accurate way to judge an amp.

THD is a measurement of distortion. The lower it is, the clearer the sound. Thats about all I know :S

also look for colour, red is good, blue not so good, silver well, but gold is really good
