$2000 is the average price for a stock rebuild.. 5,000 will get u a nicely worked rebuild.. your best bet would be to ring around a few mechanics that know what a starion is and get some quotes.. bottom lline is a rebuild is going to be exactly what u pay for, work out a budget and go from there..

ive done piston rings, bearings and the like myself at one time, i ordered all the parts i knew id be changing before I started because they needed ordering in.
I spent a week with the car's motor out did piston rings and bearings, clutch, turbo recon (didnt do head thought at this stage) changed head gasket. had car off road for a week and a half (had to wait for turbo recon and clutch so this took extra 3 days) this was all done at the same time as completing a TAFE course.
I'd say it could be done in 3-4 days with the right planning, in your car garage.
spent time on the head a week ago valves ground , head skimmed new seals all round all spent 4 days off the road including waiting time for parts (2 days)
I payed for entire lot was cost price for parts and price of a turbo re-con. say $260 for head, $650 turbo re-con and $180 for piston rings and gaskets .
hastings replacment piston rings will set you back $89
if you replace piston rings you will need to hone the bore so they can bed in. if you don't its pretty pointless changing them.

If you dont have the skills and equipment to do your own re-build, then you are up for a couple of grand. The only way to go is to do it right the first time. Chemical clean and new welsh plugs. You may get away with a hone, but in 99% of the cases you will need to re-bore and fit new pistons. Re-co the head. Crank grind and undersize bearings. New oil pump. Then you will probably find you need a clutch plate and a water pump. Probably find the Radiator is past its used by date. How are the injectors, and what about the turbo itself. Actually a couple of grand doesnt go far at all.

I just PM'd james about this but im going to put it here as well..
The rings, bore and pistons were thoroughly checked when the head was done only a few weeks ago.
The turbo is a week old.
Here is my oppinion.
If you have had it tested and it is the rings...well the only explaination i can give is that perhaps ur mate who was flogging the nuts off it on friday night (i dont know how he drove it home but i heard how he drove it on the test drive) broke one of them. This isnt the most likely outcome though.
Those of you who read my for sale thread would have seen my warning about when test driving it...it would need to be driven carefully as the turbo builder had asked me to take it very easy on it (boost as little as possible) while the turbo seals set themselves in. The car was blowing A LOT of smoke before the new turbo...and none after it.
What was said happen if it was to be cained too hard is that basically the seals would not seat in properley, potentially causing small carbon build ups etc and as a result...will leak small amount of oil at high temperatures.
As i said in the PM....i REALLY REALLY stressed taking it easy to you and your mates for a very good reason. I feel sorry for you as i know that you werent driving it and its not really ur fault if they broke it...but fact of the matter is thats the most likely outcome. Ive sent you my sugestions on how to fix it, so give that a wurl before getting too worried about rings because u dont want to waste money on them if its a quick fix.
Some of you will say that im bullshitting and trying to cover my own arse coz i sold the car but fact of the matter is guys....i couldnt give a shit. I have signed documents that say that james releases me of all responsibility etc.....so i could get up here and say HAHAH JAMES UR A DUMBASS COZ U BOUGHT A SCREWED CAR....and there wouldnt be a thing that he could do about it. So the fact of the matter is, im giving you the whole truth. U own the car now, there is no reason for me giving you info that is bullshit.
Cheers
Andrew
P.S. Radiator was replaced erm....about 4 months ago i think it was

Lol its cool james im calm...just wanted to point out that i had said it all many times before :P
Timing belt. Remember all that paperwork that i was throwing out when i went through the glovebox? One of those was the reciept for the timing and ballance belts.
Im pretty sure that the date was around about feb 03 but i dont think that woody drove the car much after that.....so so far as killometres go, it probably wasnt long ago at all.
I actually told my mechanic to replace them when the head was done but he said dont bother because they are pretty much brand new...so there should be nothing wrong with them.

When I got the engine replaced, about a month later, the balance shaft belt basically desinigrated. So I got the balance shaft and timing belts replaced, and basically hardly drove the car after that. Due to the fact of me getting the widebody. But I kept that receipt their, and that was from that mechanic I recommended.
I got a quote for all forgies, shaving, rings ect (basically hardened internals) off that mechanic for about $3000k for my engine, And that is custom made pistons.
But give him a go, you never know what could happen. Maybe it is a different problem like Andrew said.
But if you take it to him, he could have a look and let you know free of charge unless he has to pull stuff apart, but if it is a quick one, he should still do it free.

Yeah and also too...just on the note of what i said to you in PM james....ive been made more aware of why the turbo shouldnt be flogged when its new...and this point is even more valid now lol.
Dont drive it anymore without doing that flush that i sugested. Basically, what happens is, if the seals arent allowed to seat in properley, the leaking oil can potentially cause a carbon build up around the seal, therefore it wont seal, hence the smoke coming out the exhaust.
If this carbon build up becomes perminant, it will NEVER allow it to seal...and ur going to end up being up for getting the seals redone again...which would be a shame since i just spent $1000 on the turbo. Going through that proceedure that PM'd to you though james with any luck will flush out any nasty build ups that may have occurred.
Another thing that has been pointed out to me that could have happened is that if infact the turbo was causing the oil to leak...and between brisbane and the GC u managed to leak enough to send the engine dangerously low on oil...this could have damaged one of the rings.
I hope that for your sake you havent had to learn the hard way about when someone gives you advice. I cant talk though, i actually did the same thing with one of my cars when i was about 15....got told to take it easy and didnt...and nearly shot a piston through the block. We all have to learn from our mistakes somehow though and hopefully the contacts that everyone has can get this fixed as cheap as possible ;)
