Dog box for Starion 4G63

Post by hunlimo1 »

Hi guys

I live in Hungary, and I would like to race my Starion on circuit. For this I would need a stronger gearbox than the standard one. I prefer a dog type of box, but if anybody has ideas of what I can use or perhaps has experience, I would be more than happy to hear their opinion.

The car has approx 430hp.

Thanks a lot.

Welcome, nice Widebody, wheels and power you got there

Depending on how much replacement gearbox's cost, then it may be cheaper just to replace them with second hand ones evrytime it breaks.......otherwise you have the option of having the synchromesh gearbox strengthened where deemed necessary (about $1500 min) and it's won't be bullet-proof guarenteed :( or find a 'dog box' gearbox do the conversion with the help of an adaptor plate and some custom fabrication to the gearbox tunnel and tailshafts.

In actual fact that may be the best option and cheapest financially, find a 'dog box' from a rwd vehicle and adapt it to the Starion however possible :P

Many of us here aren't making enough power to be thinking of 'dog boxes', but my thoughts on going about it are about spot on for what I would do if I needed one at a reasonable price.

I had a Raliart gear-box with a dog-leg first. It was really close raitio. I bought it from David Officer many years ago.

It had synchros but a lot of gear chatter/whine, I assume it had staight cut gears.

I sold it when I decided to go V6, I really wish I had it now!

I was thinking that rx7 gearboxes are similar in dimensions to our boxes. If you wanted a circuit dog box guru racing make a reasonably priced (for a fully constructed race dog box)at about $8,900 aud. You could make an adapter plate to suit the starion and a new prop shaft to suit and you'd be in business.
I don't know how serious a gearbox you are looking for though or your budget, i know most starions here havent had half that money spent on them :).

But heres the site if you're interested

hope that helps :)

Is there no possibility of contactacting him? I maybe lucky, and he might have some leftover, or know of places that still have them?

Thanks

There were only 6 straight cut boxes made by xtrac plus 2 by Coltspeed. There were more of the helical gear mitsubishi boxes, but they are equally rare. www.coltspeed.com can get xtrac gears made for you. All syncro boxes tho, no dogs.
