Those speed's were set in the good days of Bathurst not the Falcodore/commonwhore event it is today. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the Conrod straight get modified? I heard on the grape vine it used to be straight all the way. Then those record braking speeds would have been easier.

The Holden family at work hate it when I state the speed record fact :D

Yep it was. Here's a tidbit I found:

Unlike virtually every other race track in the county, or the world for that matter, the 6.1 kilometre Mount Panorama circuit had been entirely unchanged since its inception in 1938. But in the Tooheys 1000 car race of October 1987, a violent accident that claimed the life of a driver led to a violent outcry over the horrendous speeds attained on the downhill Conrod Straight, and over the infamous ‘’second hump.’ On at least two previous occasions, cars had become airborne with fatal results, and there had been several notable get-offs with the bikes as well.

In the latest accident, the car had gone out of control over the hump and struck the steel supports of the Dunlop Bridge which spanned the track at this point. A freak accident perhaps, but one that the promoters and circuit owners were not willing to see repeated.

Their solution was to construct a deviation off Conrod Straight which came to be known as Caltex Chase. Fortunately, the designers of this stretch, which added 40 metres to the total lap, chose to ignore the current trend to ridiculously tight chicanes to serve their purpose of slowing traffic. They opted instead for a demanding right/left/right deviation that actually enhanced the appeal of an already most exciting circuit. The right hand kink off Conrod Straight, just past the old Drive In Theatre gates, could be taken flat out, with the subsequent left hander opening out to allow a rapid exit back onto the straight under the bridge. Very generous sand traps were installed to catch wayward vehicles.

in gpA was 300 bhp max we run 380 ralliart europe as no one could measure on dyno accurate with heat so we then froze coolers.bhp was low but torque high as no limits...was no restrictor b 4 group banned early 90s went to 38mm restrictor still ran t3.5 late 90s 34mm fuckthe big turbos td06s still 24 psi 32mm was group n .....

U can get 215k on level ground with a DASH, without trying too hard.

The Coltspeed Starion got 272km/h in qualifying 1991.
EDIT: This was the fastest a starion ever went in a straight line at bathurst.

Mike Burgmann died in 1986, chase was built for 1987. The speed trap was just over the last hump before the kink.

The coltspeed starion was also faster than the factory starions a few years earlier with no chase.

The old big banger Group C cars were faster than the early group A cars in a straight line, so apart from having the highest speed in 1986 the starion didn't hold any speed records to my knowledge - but they were still faster than the commodores.

And with a little bit of money thrown at them, they still are faster than falcadores, 23 years later :)
