Starter motor replacement
Starter motor replacement
Ooooh contemplating this TN magna starter (suggested by Merlin) as mines not cranking as good as it should. How does the double reduction work?
its got a set of gears in it, thus allowing the armature to spin faster, giving more torque on the output shaft.
i dont think they pull as much current from the battery when cranking as a side benefit.
they only just fit though (nearly touch the engine mount).
another good starter fix is to mount a 30 amp Bosch relay at the starter, driven from the factory starter wire from the ignition switch.
wire as follows:
relay pin 86 to the factory starter wire, black/yellow.
relay pin 85 to ground/chassis/engine block/whatever.
relay pin 30 to the heavy gauge battery wire terminal on the starter.
relay pin 87 to the starter solenoid spade lug terminal on the starter.
this gets rid of the high solenoid current through the switch and wiring loom, which is lossy.
Dave.

TN magna starter? The planetary gear reduction unit? (longer than stock otherwise similar) They are extremely dodgy (factory warranty problems) and my high comp 2.6 chewed a reco one up in about 6 cranks. Also heavy.
The one to get (if you can find one) is the offset gear reduction starter (TP?). I've never had a problem with them plus they crank with less battery power (Cookie: lighter starter+smaller cables+smaller battery=win win)
I've got a pic floating around somewhere if there is any confusion.
